Yogeshwar Nath Mishra, a young scientist, had difficulty journeying from Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, to California. His farmer father gave up a lot to help him realize his goals. But the work paid off, as Mishra is now a member of a NASA and Caltech team that developed the fastest laser sheet imaging technique in the world, which can be used to examine nanoparticles in flames.

Mishra has accomplished something that has the potential to alter our understanding of combustion fundamentally. Technological advancements have assisted in addressing significant concerns affecting society and the environment.

The team used a light sheet to cut through a three-dimensional object to give information about a specific segment of the object. According to Mishra, the invention is the fastest planar imaging camera. The modern ultra-fast cameras for similar imaging are limited to a million frames per second. In the latest innovation, the team has combined compressed sensing with streak camera technology.

“Regular cameras have 30 frames per second when it comes to capturing images. We have achieved 12.5 billion frames per second. It essentially gives two-dimensional information of a plane,” said Mishra, whose research has been published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Light Science & Application.
