Soil formation is governed by five major factors: parent material, climate, organisms, topography, and time. Parent material provides the mineral base, while climate influences weathering through temperature and rainfall. Organisms such as plants, animals, and microbes contribute organic matter and accelerate soil development. Topography affects drainage, erosion, and deposition. Time allows these processes to act, gradually transforming rock and organic residues into mature soil with distinct horizons.
