The People of Lahoul ( in Himachal Pradesh , North India ) established this Institute in 1974 to preserve the Art , Culture , Language and Philosophy of Buddhism that exist through in the region . His Holiness The Dalai Lama inaugurated this Institute . This Institute was established with high hope of bearing it’s an independent and full fledged institute . over the years the school has run with great difficulty due to lack of adequate financial support . In the year 2010 Govt. of India Ministry of Culture with the recommendation of Central Institute of Buddhist Studies Leh . (CIBS) decided to take over as branch School of CIBS Leh . Since than the CIBS Leh look after the Vidyalaya by providing Staff Salaries , Stipend for Students and day to day expenditure .The main purpose of the Institute is to sharpen the multi-faceted personality of the students through inculcation of the wisdom of Buddhist Philosophy , literature and Arts as well as to familiarize the students with the modern subjects . This has been a unique in the State because of its provision to teach all the aspects of Himalayan Buddhist Culture at one place . Earlier the School was located at Keylong , Lahoul – Spiti . Now this School is shifted to Chail Chowk (October 2015 ) Distt. Mandi Himachal Pradesh . (on temporary basis ) Now the Vidyalaya proposed to expended in a phase manner awarded the Shastri and Acharya equivalent BA & MA . So the people of Lahoul – Spiti , Kullu - Manali have come with the proposal that it should be granted status as an independent full – fledged Institute on lines of Central Institute of Buddhist Studies Leh – Ladakh and Central University of Tibetan Studies Saranath with help of CIBS Leh , Govt. Of India and State Government of Himachal Pradesh . this step will go a long way in preserving and promoting the local culture and heritage apart from it becoming a centre of excellence on the lines of other Institute . for this same purpose CIBS proposed to construct School building , Academic building , Library hostel for students , playground etc. in Kullu- Manali which is the centre of Buddhist belt area of H.P.
