Department of Performing Arts, MUC

The Department of Performing Arts, Majuli University of Culture successfully organized an academic lecture on May 15, 2026. The lecture, titled “The Contemporary Cinema of the North East: Looking through the Kaleidoscope of Seminal Filmmakers”, was delivered by Dr. Pranjal Borah, Associate Professor of Dikhowmukh College and prominent film critic.

The programme was graced by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Nirode Baruah and Dr. Tarun Gogoi, Registrar of Majuli University of Culture.

During his address, Prof. Baruah mentioned that Dr. Borah had completed his PhD under his guidance with a topic topic which could be considered as a pioneering research work that meaningfully combined cinema studies with social history.

The speaker was introduced by Dr. Anupam Kaushik Borah, Head of the Department of Performing Arts, whose much-awarded film “Bornodi Bhotiai” was also discussed appreciatively during the lecture.
The lecture witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members, and the interactive session proved to be highly enriching and academically rewarding for all present.

The Department expresses its sincere gratitude to the distinguished speaker, university authorities, faculty members, and students for making the programme a meaningful success.

A Milestone in Creative Expression: Staged at Majuli University of Culture

On May 7, 2026, the Tejaswita Shilpashala at Majuli University of Culture witnessed a landmark theatrical production titled . Presented by the M.A. 4th Semester theatre art students of the Department of Performing Arts, the play was a culmination of their "Advanced Theatre Making" course.
Exploring the sensitive and profound theme of same-sex love, the production moved the audience with its emotional resonance and thought-provoking narrative.
Developed, planned, devised and performed by the students themselves, the project was supervised by Dr. Anupam Kaushik Borah, Head of the Department and Assistant Professor (Theatre Art).
The integration of multi-layered scenography, innovative lighting and new media design offered a multidimensional viewing experience that pushed the boundaries of traditional theatre.
The Honorable Vice-Chancellor of the university graced the occasion, lauding the students for their bold creative vision and encouraging them to persist in such meaningful artistic endeavors. stands as a historic production in the department's journey, receiving high acclaim for its powerful performances and technical brilliance.

The Department of Performing Arts of Majuli University of Culture celebrated World Dance Day 2026 with great enthusiasm and cultural vibrancy within the university premises. The occasion, globally observed on 29th April to promote awareness of the art of dance and its universal appeal. The programme commenced with an inaugural session by respected Registrar of the University and marked by a series of engaging performances showcasing classical, folk, and creative dance forms.
A special highlight of the event was the visit of the Women on Wheels (Kameng Group) – Season 4, a group known for the spirit of adventure and contribution towards women empowerment.
The programme concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Dimple Saikia, Assistant Professor, Department of Performing Arts.

With great pleasure we would like to share that bona fide student of Department of Performing Arts, Majuli University of Culture, Brishtirani Hazarika of FYIMP Semester VI, Performing Arts, Theatre Stream is invited to present her solo physical theatre performance “Moonlight of the Island” - her own concept, performance and direction work, in Colombo International Theatre Festival 2026, at Colombo, Sri Lanka on 23rd August, 2026. She will participate in the festival under the banner of AANK - A Creative Line. The Department of Performing Arts, as a part of its outreach effort and student/artiste collaboration initiatives, has been sending students to an international theatre festival cm workshop called BBITF : Bhulung Bhuthur International Theater Festival organised by AANK - A Creative Line in Guwahati for the past two years. One of our most dedicated students, Brishtirani, has received this rare opportunity to go abroad with her own creation.

Students of the Theatre Art stream, FYIMP 4th Semester, Department of Performing Arts, Majuli University of Culture, performed a segment of Arun Sarma’s timeless play as a on April 27, 2026, in Classroom-4. The scenework was created and performed under the supervision of Dr. Anupam Kaushik Borah, Head of the Department and Assistant Professor of the Drama stream.

The primary objective of this exercise was to highlight the multi-layered meanings and experiences of the play by using the inherent significance and experiences carried by "objects" to create space, atmosphere, and mood. Embracing the challenge of limited facilities and resources positively, the students utilized Found Objects and discarded materials to recreate the multidimensional and "moody" world of "Aahar."

The Honorable Vice-Chancellor of the university attended the event as an appreciative audience and mentor. He highly praised the students' creativity and reiterated the immense importance the university and the department place on practical education in performing arts. He further called for 100% dedication and commitment from the students. The Honorable Registrar, also present as a supportive observer, remarked that since the students are guided by expert faculty, they should take full advantage of this opportunity to advance their creativity and careers. The student audience also shared detailed feedback and congratulated the performers.

Department of Performing Arts, Majuli University of Culture, successfully organized a specialized 10-day workshop on Sattriya Music - Prasangiya Borgeet for FYIM 2nd Semester and MA 2nd Semester Dance and Music Specialisation students, from March 23 to April 2, 2026. We were honored to have the renowned Sattriya Culture Exponent , Shri Muhikanta Borbayan and Borgayan, lead the sessions. The workshop concluded on April 2 with a practical assessment, where our talented students demonstrated their learning with great success. This initiative marks another significant step by the department toward the preservation, training, and global promotion of Assam’s rich classical culture.

The students of the Five Year Integrated Masters in Performing Arts (4th Semester), Theatre Art stream at Majuli University of Culture are diving deep into the world of Arun Sarma’s iconic play, "Ahaar." As part of their Theatre Design and Design Scenework training, under the expert guidance of Dr. Anupam Kaushik Borah (HOD & Assistant Professor, Theatre Art), a special classroom presentation was held on April 6, 2026. The highlight of the session was a "Dramatic Reading" of two major portions of the play, bringing the script to life through reading and space design.

Exciting times at the Department of Performing Arts, Majuli University of Culture! The PG 4th-semester students of the Theatre Art stream are currently crafting a yet untitled play as part of their Advance Theatre Making / Students’ Production course/project. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Anupam Kaushik Borah (HOD & Assistant Professor, Theatre Art), the students successfully presented a 'Work in Progress' Classroom Demonstration today, showcasing their hard work and creative evolution. Department of Performing Arts, MUC, FYIM Sem 6, Theatre Art students, under the guidance of Assistant Professor of Theatre Art Gunamoni Boruah, showcased their Physical Theatre Solo Pieces today at Tejashwita Shilpashala of Majuli University of Culture. The students had the opportunity to experience acting and performance through yet another unique creative process.
