Hello Parents!! Grade 9 Parents.. As I was reading this Article, I thought of sharing the important pointers!!
1. Class IX will now have 6 main subjects
For promotion to Class X, the six subjects are:
Language 1 (R1)
Language 2 (R2)
Mathematics
Science
Social Science
Vocational Education / Kaushal Vikas
The article says vocational education will now be compulsory and will count for promotion.
🌐 2. The biggest change: Three-language formula
The move is from a two-language system to a three-language system, with greater emphasis on Indian languages.
For Class IX students who already studied three languages in Classes VII–VIII, they can generally continue with the same combination in Class IX.
The third language becomes R3 and is internally assessed—there is currently no CBSE board examination for R3.
⚠️ 3. What if a student has two non-Indian languages?
There is a one-time relaxation for students who have been studying two non-Indian languages.
For example, a student studying English + French will have to add an Indian language such as Hindi/Sanskrit/another Indian language before the Class X board examinations.
This is something parents of students in international/foreign-language-heavy schools should pay particular attention to.
➗ 4. Basic & Standard Maths are being discontinued
This is a big change.
From 2026–27, the existing Basic/Standard Mathematics structure for Class IX is being discontinued.
All students will study the common Mathematics syllabus.
Students can additionally opt for Advanced Mathematics, which will have a separate one-hour, 25-mark assessment.
Importantly, the article says the Advanced Maths marks will not be added to the aggregate or used for promotion.
