1. What is Risk?

Risk is the combination of:
Risk = Severity ร— Likelihood

Severity = How serious the consequence could be if the hazardous event occurs.
Likelihood = How likely or how frequently the hazardous event could occur.

2. Severity
Severity considers the extent of damage or loss that could result from an incident.

It may include:
Fatality loss of life.
Serious injury - permanent disability or major injury.
Injury - medical treatment or lost-time injury.
Property damage damage to equipment, tools, structures, etc.
Production loss - interruption or shutdown of operations.
Environmental damage contamination, spills, emissions, etc.
Financial loss - repair costs, compensation, project delays, etc.

The purpose of HAC is to ensure that electrical equipment and installations in such areas are designed, selected, and maintained to prevent ignition sources.

Definition: HAC divides plant areas into zones based on the frequency and duration of the presence of explosive atmospheres.
