What does voltage actually mean in Physics?

Key idea
• Voltage is not just a number written on a battery.
• It tells us how much energy a source supplies to electric charge.

Energy supplied by a battery
• When a battery is connected in a circuit, it gives energy to the charges flowing through it.
• A 3 volt battery supplies 3 joules of energy to every one coulomb of charge.
• A 9 volt battery supplies 9 joules of energy per coulomb.
• A 4 volt battery supplies 4 joules of energy per coulomb.

Conclusion
• Voltage is the energy supplied per unit charge.
• Understanding this concept helps students clearly understand EMF and electric circuits.

Physics isn’t difficult. It’s misunderstood.
Most students try to memorize formulas without understanding the structure behind a problem. That’s why it feels overwhelming.
Every physics question follows a system: •
Understand the situation
• Identify what’s given and required
• Apply the right concept
Once you see the structure, solving becomes systematic — not stressful.

🔹 Electromotive Force (EMF) — A Core Concept in Electricity

• EMF refers to the energy supplied by a source per coulomb of charge to drive current in a circuit.
• It represents the work done by the cell or battery on the charges.
• EMF is measured in volts (V).

What most students get wrong:
• EMF is often confused with potential difference.
• Many assume EMF depends on the components in the circuit — it does not.
• EMF is the energy supplied by the source, not the energy used by components.

Understanding this distinction is essential for building strong fundamentals in Physics, especially at the IGCSE, AS, and A Level stage.
