The vagus nerve is the body’s inner safety system. It constantly scans for danger, connection, rejection and protection, shaping whether you move into Fight, Flight, Freeze or Fawn responses. Healing begins when you become conscious of the state you are operating from instead of blindly reacting from it. You cannot jump directly from Freeze into a fully regulated state. The nervous system climbs slowly toward safety. A person in Freeze often first shifts into Flight, trying to escape discomfort. From Flight, they may move into Fight, which, though reactive, still carries more agency than collapse or avoidance. Freeze and Fawn are deeply disempowered states that move toward self-erasure. The key is not forcing regulation, but slowly moving up the scale with conscious awareness, helping the nervous system feel safe enough to return to connection, presence and choice.
( It is useful to develop greater awaress about habitual response states with significant individuals, and slowly, and very consciously, move up the scale while interacting with those people.)
