The challenge was to combine the visual language of ๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘’๐‘ก ๐‘โ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘”๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘โ„Ž๐‘ฆ ๐‘ค๐‘–๐‘กโ„Ž ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›, ๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘ฆ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘Ž๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘๐‘  ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘“๐‘Ž๐‘ โ„Ž๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘โ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘”๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘โ„Ž๐‘ฆ while finding the right frame, controlling light, directing the subject and working with an unpredictable environment, all within a fraction of a second.

That requires far more than knowing how to operate a camera. It requires ๐‘œ๐‘๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฃ๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›, ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘๐‘–๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›, ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘๐‘œ๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›, ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘”โ„Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘›๐‘”, ๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘š๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘–๐‘š๐‘š๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘’ ๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘โ„Ž๐‘›๐‘–๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘™ ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ.

Fashion photography is usually about beautiful locations, controlled environments, perfect backgrounds, and, most importantly, space to create.

So when Canon India proposed something very different; shooting a Fashion Photography Workshop inside the Flower Market of Calcutta, one of the busiest and most chaotic places in the city, on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi, one of the busiest days of the year; we simply said:

โ€œ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ž ๐€๐œ๐œ๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ž๐.โ€

No empty streets. No controlled sets. No pristine locations. Just flowers, people, colour, chaos and an incredible amount of energy.

And perhaps that is exactly why Canon chose ๐‚๐’๐‚๐ for this project. They knew that when the environment becomes difficult, creativity has to become stronger; and that we could be trusted to turn even the most unpredictable surroundings into compelling fashion photographs.

What followed was a fantastic exercise in ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด, ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐˜๐˜€๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฝ; finding frames, controlling light and creating fashion imagery right in the middle of the chaos.
