What about other fields of engineering?
Shekhar Sanyal – Country Head – The IET India (UK-based engineering association with 53 student chapters in India), says that core engineering subjects will be in high demand as always but the application will constantly evolve. “IT will become embedded in all core functions and will enable the core functions to become much more effective,” he shares. For instance, GE India Technology Center hires engineers from Aerospace, Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical and Computer Science streams. Students have also started looking back at what they call core engineering jobs, that is to say “work in shop floor”, feels Micheal Baymiller, Director - HR at International Paper, a global leader in packaging and paper. IP’s India plant hires for a wide range of positions, from Mechanical Maintenance, Civil and Electrical, to Process In- charge, Paper machine and Chemical. “It comes with its own set of challenges as students’ tenacity levels in terms of sticking to a job has drastically come down,”observes Micheal.

What are the upcoming jobs to prepare for in the next 10 years?

Shekhar Sanyal, Country Head of The IET India : advises students to look at careers in smart engineering: Smart Power Systems, Smart Built Environment, Medical Engineering, Smart Transport systems and Smart Communications. He also points out that in the next 10 years, a whole generation of engineers will retire from public sector power companies and while engineering colleges do not specifically offer a power specialisation, students can look towards combining power and IT skills to meet the upcoming challenges in the power sector. Some top power sector companies include NTPC ,NHPC, REC and NEEPCO. Hardware and manufacturing will also grow and production engineering will be a valued area. Sanyal also predicts that over the next five years India will start manufacturing semiconductors as opposed to merely designing them, and this field will need trained professionals. In fact, the recent union budget supported IC chip makers by waiving the custom duty for importing semiconductor equipment and machinery for chips fabs.

How current robotics advancements can have real-world applications???

The field of robotics is heating up with ever-growing innovations for healthcare. Forecasts from the UK's Visiongain suggest the overall world market for robotics in healthcare will surpass $3 billion this year and continue expanding to 2025.
"Surgical robots are currently the most dynamic submarket within the overall robotics in healthcare market," the company states. "Medical robots that exhibit both clinical and economical benefits over existing healthcare solutions are in great demand."

In the United States, Johnson & Johnson and Google have announced a strategic collaboration specifically to advance surgical robotics through new technologies designed to improve accuracy, cost efficiency and outcomes.
The deal involves Ethicon, a medical device company under Johnson & Johnson, and Google's Life Sciences team. The companies say they aim to integrate best-in-class medical device technology with leading-edge robotic systems, imaging and data analytics. The transaction is expected to close during the second quarter of 2015.

Cyrus Mistry sees growth potential in 'Make in India'...Tata foray into Big data and digital healthcare:

The $100-billion Tata Group under new Chairman Cyrus Mistry is making a big foray into the next big wave of digital healthcare and big data services.
The Group has taken a decision recently to give these two new emerging businesses focused group attention. Sources say Tata Industries will be taking the initiative to create two separate verticals under it to give it management time, attention and resources.
Tata Industries has been a vehicle for the Group's entry into new and high-tech businesses. In the past, the company has been instrumental in promoting businesses in telecom, financial services, IT, auto component and control systems.
Currently, apart from digital healthcare and big data, Tata Industries is also focusing on energy and materials as two other verticals with promise for the future.
The digital healthcare business will focus on analytics-based electronic medical records, clinical diagnostics, monitoring devices, home monitoring and mobile tracking of health and wellness parameters. The objective is preventive and predictive healthcare, which has been a big theme in the market.
The digital theme of Tatas also goes well with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Digital India campaign where the PM talked about making healthcare affordable and within reach of the poor. Healthcare as an industry has been the fastest growing segment with corporates making foray into hospitals.
The sector has the potential to grow big given the increasing per capita income, urbanisation and health awareness amongst people.
The big data business will build a common data analytics platform and help companies generate unique consumer insights to increase sales, reduce customer acquisition costs and improve targeting of customers, improve efficiency and also help in customer retention strategy. Overall, big data will give competitive advantages to companies in today's cut throat competition. NASSCOM has recently estimated the data analytics market to be $2.3 billion in the next three years.

BigData .......... Another Word For IT.

02/04/2015

Did you know?

Over US$300,000 is spent on online shopping per minute
Over 7000 photos are updated on Flickr per minute
Over 600 videos are updated on YouTube per minute

These activities are generating huge amounts of complex data, which is being eagerly lapped up by corporates, helping them make evidence-based and consumer-oriented decisions with a high impact on business operations. "Big Data" relates to this rapidly growing datasets with sizes beyond the ability of conventional database tools to store, manage, and analyse them.

This is creating a huge opportunity for the Big Data industry globally. By 2015, Big Data is expected to become a US$25 billion industry, growing at a CAGR of 45 per cent, driven by uses across industries such as manufacturing, retail, financial services, telecom, and healthcare. While IT services and analytics firms in North America currently dominate the global market with their Big Data solutions, companies in emerging markets like India and China are expected to catch up soon with the region becoming a hub for high-end data solutions.
