Glimpses of Kashi Utsav 2017 Bangeswar mahadev Mandir Salkia Howrah

The Legacy 06/07/2016

Pandit Bundi Mishra

Pandit Bundi Mishra (also known as Bundi Maharaj) was born in 1890 AD approximately, in a family of renowned musicians. His elder brother Pandit Shyama mishra was another major student of Bhagat ji other than Pt. Bhairav prasad mishra. Hence Bundi ji at a very young age started learning tabla under rich guidance of his elder brother.

Since Shyama mishra moved to Kolkata with his family due to professional reasons Bundi ji's training was continued over there only.
Very soon Bundi ji came up as a promising tabla player. Vigorous and masculine approach in his tabla gradually made him a unique and very popular amongst music lovers, especially in Bengal and Bihar. Due to his matchless riyaz he got able to attain incredible WAJANDAARI (weight) and that too with enough volume spiced up with infinite number of syllable especially in Gats and Kaydas..... (a major and exclusive chapter of Benaras's tabla)

Eventually, Bundi ji became one of the most favourite and demanded accompanist amongst music maestros of that era. He was a regular tabla accompanist with Ustad Inayet khan saheb (father of Ustad Vilayat khan)

Once he was playing a Tabla solo in Kolkata and someone mischievously changed his baaya (Dugga) with a random one. The moment he began his Uthan the baaya ripped off in initial few strokes and he said "only my Baaya can bare my pressure" Still people thought it was just a co-incidence and kept offering him few more Baayas, it's said that he ripped off 7 Baayas in a row that evening while playing uthaan only. Finally everybody was sorry and gave him his baaya back and then he continued to play...... It's just an example of his masculine "Nikaas" and Wajandaari.

He got blessed by two sons Pt Damodar mishra (vocal) and Pt Chaamu mishra (sarangi) and several students from Bengal, Bihar and around. Later on, two of his Grandsons came up as most promising Tabla players in the Family i.e, Pt. Madan Gopal Mishra (based in Mumbai) and Pt. Sohan lal Mishra (passed away recently) these two tabla maestros responsibly preserved and enriched the knowledge of Pt. Bundi Maharaj.
