কলকাতার সাউথ পয়েন্ট স্কুলের প্রথম ব্যাচের শিক্ষক/শিক্ষিকা l পরিচিতের মধ্যে আছেন পিছনে শ্রী উৎপল দত্ত ও এন বিশ্বনাথান l

১৯৫৪ সালের পয়লা এপ্রিল কবি শ্রী সতিকান্ত গুহ এবং তাঁর স্ত্রী প্রীতিলতা গুহ দেবী, কলকাতার গরিয়াহাটে, সাউথ পয়েন্ট স্কুলের প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। এই স্কুলটি, তাঁর জীবিতকালেই, গীনেস বুক অফ ওয়ার্লড রেকর্ডস এ স্থান করে নেয়, সর্বাধিক ছাত্রসংখ্যার স্কুলের নিরিখে। ১৯৯০ সালের গীনেস বুক অফ রেকর্ডস এ আমরা পাই -
“Largest School - South Point High School, Calcutta, India, had an enrollment of 12350 regular students in 1983-84”.

উৎকর্ষের দিক থেকেও এই স্কুলের খ্যাতি সর্বজনবিদিত।
সেই স্কুলে একসময় পড়িয়েছেন উৎপল
দত্ত, কমলকুমার মজুমদার, শেখর চট্টোপাধ্যায়, মঙ্গলাচরণ চট্টোপাধ্যায়, এন বিশ্বনাথন, সুরজিত সেন, গীতা ঘটক প্রমুখরা।

বলা বাহুল্য এই সাউথ পয়েন্ট স্কুলেই একসময় স্থান পায় “লিটল থিয়েটার গ্রুপ”, “আলী আকবর কলেজ অফ মিউজিক”, “বালিগঞ্জ কালচারাল সেমিনার” ও গুরু থাঙ্কমণি কুট্টির নৃত্যের স্কুল “কলামণ্ডলম”।
কবি শ্রী সতিকান্ত গুহ নিজেই কিছুদিনের জন্য
প্রকাশনা সংস্থা খোলেন এবং সেখান থেকে অবনীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের “রাজকাহিনী" , দক্ষিণারঞ্জন মিত্রের “ফার্স্ট বয় লাস্ট বয়”, শিবরাম চক্রবর্তীর “বাড়ী থেকে পালিয়ে” বইগুলি প্রকাশিত করেন।

Golden Memories of South Point Days-

Name of the Photo: South Point Carnival Memory

This photo was taken in the early 1990s, just before the start of a particular sport carnival in a South Calcutta Stadium.

To celebrate this incredible moment, here is a little story with this photo.

Memories of South Point keeps coming back to me, even though I am busy enjoying my multicultural and globe trotting life continuously. Today looking through my old collection of South Point photos in my leather folder, finally I found this classic. It brings back the memories of a mammoth gathering of students and parents to celebrate South Point School sports carnival.

On the day, every South Point student was enjoying the carnival with his or her teachers and parents and there I was. Standing next to Indra Nath Guha watching the gathering. Mr Guha was then the principal of our school, a learned English teacher and the son of Santikanta Guha.( Late Santikanta Guha, the founder of South Point whom I used to regularly see enjoying discussion with school mates in our upmarket Mandavilla Gardens School in Ballygunge premise). In that South Calcutta stadium, I came, I saw and I understood the strength that South Point students. The collective strength they can enjoy to create a better world,should they all work together.

South Point alumni 👩‍🎓 awarded Nobel Prize

Nobel Prize in economics awarded to trio for work on poverty Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer were awarded the Nobel Prize in economics on Monday for research on alleviating global poverty.

This is a shot from SPHS staff room probably in the 90s .. Can you identify the teachers ?

I am talking about the late 90s. 11D AnjanSir used to teach physics, Prithwish Sir in charge of math, Sharmila aunty - chemistry and ever popular among boys Romi Aunty in Biology ... I know 90s sound prehistoric but please feel free to share anecdotes about your favorite teacher .. all decades are welcome !!
