The Association of Energy Engineers India (AEE) IISWBM Kolkata Student Chapter, in collaboration with the CWEEL Kolkata Group, recently hosted a transformative seminar titled "WOMEN IN AI FOR SUSTAINABILITY: Bridging the Gender Gap for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals."
The event explored the intersection of emerging technology and social equity, emphasizing that the path to reaching our global Net Zero and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must be paved with inclusivity. By focusing on the critical need for more women in AI and STEM, the seminar highlighted how reducing gender bias in algorithmic development is essential to building a future that is both technologically advanced and ethically sound.
We were honored to have the session graced by esteemed industry and academic leaders, including Dr. Sharmistha Banerjee (HoD of Business Management, Calcutta University) and Arundhati Mukherjee (Head of Fuel Management, MTPS,DVC). Their insights into the systemic barriers currently facing women in technical sectors—and the immense value added when those barriers are dismantled—provided a roadmap for the next generation of energy and sustainability professionals. Their presence underscored the message that sustainability is not just an environmental challenge, but a human-centric one that requires diverse perspectives at the decision-making table.
A special note of gratitude goes to Piyali Sengupta and Sarbani Mitra for their leadership and for providing our student members with the opportunity to facilitate this vital dialogue. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated team of student volunteers whose hard work ensured the event’s success. At AEE IISWBM, we remain committed to fostering an environment where innovation meets equity, ensuring that our members are equipped to lead an inclusive transition toward a more sustainable world.
