🧬 | Bacterial Transformation

Ever wondered how scientists introduce new genes into bacteria?

🔬 Bacterial Transformation is the process by which bacteria take up foreign DNA, usually in the form of a plasmid, and maintain or express the introduced genetic material. This simple yet powerful technique forms the foundation of modern molecular biology and genetic engineering.

📌 Key Steps:
1️⃣ Preparation of competent bacterial cells
2️⃣ Uptake of recombinant plasmid DNA
3️⃣ Incorporation and maintenance of foreign DNA
4️⃣ Selection of transformed cells

🌱 Applications of Bacterial Transformation:
✔️ Gene cloning and DNA amplification
✔️ Production of recombinant proteins such as insulin and growth hormones
✔️ Functional studies of genes and gene expression
✔️ Development of genetically engineered microbes for biotechnology, agriculture, and environmental applications

From life-saving therapeutics to cutting-edge research, bacterial transformation remains one of the most important tools in biotechnology.

Ever wondered how scientists edit DNA with surgical precision? 🤔🧬 Welcome to another edition of , brought to you by the Department of Microbiology and Department of Biotechnology at SNU!

Today, we are diving into CRISPR-Cas9—the groundbreaking genetic scissors that are rewriting the future of medicine and agriculture.

Here is how this 4-step magic happens:
1️⃣ DESIGN: A custom guide RNA is created to match the specific target gene.
2️⃣ BIND: The Cas9 protein and guide RNA home in and lock onto the target DNA sequence.
3️⃣ CUT: Cas9 acts like molecular scissors, making a highly precise cut at the target site.
4️⃣ EDIT: The cell's natural repair machinery kicks in to disable or replace the target gene.

From treating complex genetic disorders and fighting infectious diseases to engineering resilient crops and advancing cancer immunotherapy, CRISPR is unlocking answers to some of humanity's biggest challenges. 🌍✨
