International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, globally.

We at Bodhi Bhavans, view it as a call to action for spreading awareness amongst future generations regarding gender parity, recognizing the barriers women face, and celebrating the milestones in women’s fight for their rights and equality.

As we encourage and educate our students to follow some of the suggested acts/gestures, similarly, we implore you to raise awareness on women's rights for the kids to learn and emulate.

1. Attend Local Events: Many cities host marches, workshops, conferences, and more in honor of IWD.
2. Support Women-Owned Businesses: Make an effort to purchase from businesses owned and operated by women.
3. Educate and Raise Awareness: Share stories, articles, and resources about women’s achievements and the challenges they face.
4. Wear Purple: Purple is the official color of International Women’s Day. Wearing it shows solidarity and support.
5. Engage on Social Media: Use the official hashtags to join the conversation and amplify the voices of women worldwide.

The origins of International Women’s Day date back to the early 20th century, stemming from labor movements and women’s suffrage activism. Over the years, the United Nations began to adopt and promote the day, setting annual themes that highlight various aspects of women’s rights and equality. Today, IWD is recognized worldwide, drawing attention to issues like gender disparity, women’s rights, and celebrating the countless achievements of women throughout history.

On January 26, 1930, the Indian National Congress, led by Mahatma Gandhi, declared 'Purna Swaraj" or complete independence. This proclamation laid down the guiding principles for India's sovereignty and democratic ideals.
20 years later, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led the Indian Constituent Assembly, which painstakingly drafted the Constitution of India.

On January 26, 1950, a young India took a bold and definitive step towards upholding democratic values and cultural diversity by adopting the Constitution of India as our governing document.

This date was chosen with purpose, aligning the celebration with the historic significance of the 'Purna Swaraj' celebration.
