Abstract

The timing of the Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR) onset significantly influences agriculture, food security, livelihoods, and the Indian economy. While the drivers of climatological ISMR onset are well discussed, the causes of delayed ISMR onset remain unclear. This study shows that the delay is primarily driven by anomalous high pressure over the Arabian Sea and anomalous low pressure over the Mascarene High, which weakens the regional Hadley circulation and, consequently, the low-level moist southwesterly winds over the Arabian Sea. This weakening of southwesterlies directly delays the ISMR onset. When the ocean forces the atmosphere over the Arabian Sea, it alters the earlier delaying conditions and creates a favorable environment for the ISMR onset. The key novelty of this study is understanding the combined role of the Mascarene High, regional Hadley circulation, and Arabian Sea air–sea interactions in regulating delayed ISMR onset, offering new insights for improving ISMR onset prediction.

We proudly congratulate Prof. Parthasarathi Chakraborty, Head of the Centre for Ocean, River, Atmosphere, and Land Sciences (CORAL), on receiving a prestigious International Award from the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

The award was recently presented to Prof. Chakraborty in New Orleans, USA, in the presence of the current President and President-Elect of AGU, underscoring the global significance of this recognition.

Prof. Chakraborty’s pioneering contributions to marine biogeochemistry, trace metal speciation, and climate–ocean interactions have firmly positioned him among the world’s leading Earth system scientists. He will be formally honoured at the AGU Fall Meeting in New Orleans. Remarkably, Prof. Chakraborty is only the third scientist from India to receive this distinguished honour - a moment of immense pride for IIT Kharagpur and Indian science.

This achievement reaffirms IIT Kharagpur’s commitment to cutting-edge research, global sustainability, and nurturing future scientific leaders.

🌍 Pranab Deb writes for the WMO-PCAPS blog! ❄️

Prof. Pranab Deb, CORAL, IIT Kharagpur, and Principal Investigator of the Polar Climate Modelling Group, recently shared his journey and vision for advancing India’s polar research through the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)’s Polar Coupled Analysis and Prediction Services blog.

In his blog, Prof. Deb underscores the urgent need for Indian scientists to conceptualise, lead, and execute multidisciplinary and multinational collaborations to address the complex global climate challenges of our time (e.g., Antarctic climate change). The blog highlights the work of the Polar Climate Modelling Lab at CORAL, a dedicated research group for Antarctic and polar climate modelling, which focuses on Antarctic ice-shelf stability, surface melting, and the role of tropical-polar teleconnections in driving extreme events.

Reflecting this vision, Prof. Deb has recently been entrusted with leading a new WMO PCAPS Task Team on Antarctic Extreme Events and Their Impacts, which will unite experts worldwide to study phenomena such as heatwaves, atmospheric rivers, rapid sea-ice loss, and marine heatwaves, and their cascading effects on ice shelves and ecosystems.

CORAL takes pride in supporting such pioneering leadership that strengthens India’s global footprint in polar climate research.

NEW STUDY from CORAL led by our PhD student Rahul Kashyap and Prof. Jayanarayanan Kuttippurath : the first comprehensive investigation of ecological droughts, their drivers, and their implications during the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM).

STUDY reveals that ecological droughts have been increasing across ecologically fragile regions, including pristine forests and croplands, leading to a decline in vegetation health across India.

The rise in multiple forms of aridity, together with shifts in the Indian Summer Monsoon associated with ocean warming and intensified anthropogenic pressures, has contributed to the increasing occurrence and severity of ecological droughts across the country.

The study is published in Communications Earth and Environment (from Nature Group). Its an open access article.

Prof. Brajesh Kr. Dubey, Professor of Environmental Engineering and Management, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kharagpur, will join us as the Invited Speaker for this month’s seminar.

Prof. Dubey currently serves as Dean of Campus and Community Development and Chair of the School of Water Resources, and leads the Circular Engineering Research Group (CERG) at IIT Kharagpur. With a distinguished career spanning academia and industry across India, the USA, Canada, and New Zealand, his pioneering research in sustainability, circular economy, and waste management has earned international acclaim. He has authored over 350 publications, including 190 peer-reviewed papers, with more than 12,000 citations, and continues to play a leading role in shaping science-based environmental policy and education.

Prof. M.D. Behera, from CORAL, IIT Kharagpur, was invited by the Australian High Commissioner to attend an Evening Reception at the Australian Embassy, New Delhi, on 16 October 2025, hosted in the presence of The Hon Dr Anne Aly MP, Australia’s Minister for Multicultural Affairs, International Development and Small Business.

This invitation follows Prof. Behera’s participation in the Australian Award Fellowship awarded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Government of Australia, during which he visited Sydney from 25 September to 15 October 2023.

The interaction reflects the continuation of mutual engagement and may open a new window for future collaborations between CORAL, IIT Kharagpur, and Australian institutions. 🇮🇳🤝🇦🇺

CryoSCOPE project, funded by the European Union and MoES, GoI, is being jointly carried out by IIT Madras, the University of Kashmir, and IIT Kharagpur, under a collaborative effort to study the impact of climate change on Himalayan glaciers and associated downstream risks. Dr. Pranab Deb (CORAL) is the lead from IIT Kharagpur.

As part of the project, a state-of-the-art observational site is being established in a Himalayan glacier catchment to monitor glacier melt and hydro-meteorological processes.

This initiative marks an important step in advancing India’s cryosphere and climate research capabilities.
