PhD Studentship in plasma processing of 2D materials

Plasmas are strongly non-equilibrium systems generating an exotic physical and chemical environment through free electrons at low gas temperatures. This unique environment allows treatment of temperature sensitive materials with molecular precision. Plasma technologies underpin many high-end industries.
2D nanostructures and new materials are extremely attractive materials with unique surface and interfaces properties. Graphene is a well-known member of this class. Recently, new class of materials structurally more complicated transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as MoS2; offer exciting possibilities beyond graphene range.
You will explore the effect of voltage waveforms on the electrical characteristics of the atmospheric pressure plasma and in turn its effect on the 2D material properties. Influence of different plasma sources such as DC, pulsed DC and RF on the plasma characteristics will be studied in detail... You will be using Atomic Force Microscopy and advanced surface characterisation methods, such as XPS, STEM and Raman spectroscopy and HRTEM to characterize the material properties.
This project will also involve traveling to synchrotron light source and other synchrotron beamlines, to understand the electronic and optical properties of materials.
This project is multidisciplinary in nature and you will be collaborating with Professor Nick Braithwaite from Plasma lab at The Open University and Dr. Ramprasad Gandhiraman, NASA Ames Research Centre.
