The Centre was established in 1971 to undertake research activities in the areas of glass and ceramics, polymers, semiconductor, allied materials and composites. The development of know-how and manufacturing technologies of many strategic and advanced materials like Opto-electronic Materials and Devices, Semiconductor Lasers, Polymer Blends etc were taken up by the centre. With state-of-the-art in

frastructure the centre conducts major sponsored research projects and has developed a range of products today and applications, including Ferromagnetic insulator cermets for Telecom Equipment, Alumina composites, Drag Resistant Polymers for Sprinkler Irrigation Systems, Ceramic Components by Gel Casting, Synthesis of Nano sized Nonoxide Ceramic Powders

At the open university, in Department of Engineering and Innovation, our nanoscale energy and surface engineering research group aims is to contribute to global impact, making a positive difference to the world to solve some of the major problems that society faces today.
We focus on the outcomes of our research that will represent a significant and original advancement of knowledge in the area of new materials and functionalization of materials through plasma based techniques and will be published in leading science and / or engineering journals, as well as high quality thesis.

Plasmas are strongly non-equilibrium systems generating an exotic physical and chemical environment through free electrons at low gas temperatures. This unique environment allows treatment of temperature sensitive materials with molecular precision. Plasma technologies underpin many high-end industries.
2D nanostructures and new materials are extremely attractive materials with unique surface and interfaces properties. Graphene is a well-known member of this class. Recently, new class of materials structurally more complicated transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as MoS2; offer exciting possibilities beyond graphene range.
You will explore the effect of voltage waveforms on the electrical characteristics of the atmospheric pressure plasma and in turn its effect on the 2D material properties. Influence of different plasma sources such as DC, pulsed DC and RF on the plasma characteristics will be studied in detail... You will be using Atomic Force Microscopy and advanced surface characterisation methods, such as XPS, STEM and Raman spectroscopy and HRTEM to characterize the material properties.
This project will also involve traveling to synchrotron light source and other synchrotron beamlines, to understand the electronic and optical properties of materials.
This project is multidisciplinary in nature and you will be collaborating with Professor Nick Braithwaite from Plasma lab at The Open University and Dr. Ramprasad Gandhiraman, NASA Ames Research Centre.
