Kargil, August 6, 2026: First-year undergraduate students of B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture, B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture, and B.F.Sc. (Fisheries Science) from the School of Horticultural Sciences and Technology, University of Ladakh, undertook a one-day exposure visit to the Department of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture, Kargil, and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kargil. The visit was organized as part of the non-credit induction programme “Deeksharambh”.
The objective of the visit was to familiarize students with the functioning of government departments and extension agencies, and to provide practical insights into agriculture, horticulture, and fisheries beyond classroom learning.
At the Department of Agriculture, Kargil, students were briefed by Dr. Tsewang Rigzin, Officer In-Charge, Agriculture Farm, Khurbathang, about various schemes related to crop production, soil health, seed distribution, and plant protection, along with the support provided to farmers.
During their visit to the Department of Horticulture, Kargil, Dr. Aqleema Banoo, State Horticulture Consultant, explained important crop management practices such as budding, training, and pruning. Students also visited the nursery and observed rose cultivation and cucumber production under protected conditions.
At Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kargil, Dr. Mansoor, Junior Scientist, introduced the students to the role of KVKs as Farm Science Centres under ICAR. He highlighted key activities including frontline demonstrations, farmer training, advisory services, and promotion of agri-entrepreneurship. Students also visited demonstration plots, training facilities, and soil testing units to understand how research technologies are adapted and shared with farmers.
The visit was an important part of the Deeksharambh programme, aimed at helping students understand the wider system of agricultural education, research, and extension. Faculty coordinators Dr. Mohd. Abass, Dr. Tsultim Palmo, and Dr. Ankit accompanied the students and emphasized that such visits help bridge the gap between theory and practice, while also exposing students to various career opportunities in the agricultural sector.
