Padum. 18 July 2025. GDC Zanskar organizes daylong conference on Water Management Strategies in Zanskar region.
GDC Zanskar, under the supervision of Principal, Dr Amjad Ali Abbasi, in collaboration with Environmental Education and Conservation Global (EECG), Acres of Ice and Conservation with Compassion in the Himalayas (CCH) held a daylong conference on Water Management Strategies focusing on building climate change adaptation networks and advancing sustainable water solutions for the Zanskar region. Progressive farmers from different villages of Zanskar, research scholars, faculty members of GDC Zanskar and students participated in the event.
Er. Punchok Tashi, Hon’ble Executive Councilor was the chief guest on the occasion. In his address Er. Tashi thanked the NGOs for coming to Zanskar and selecting Zanskar for their projects. He emphasized upon the future oriented management of the water resources in the drought prone villages of Zanskar.
Mehak Abdullah from Acres of ice shared her insights on micro irrigation systems and its potential implementation in Zanskar. Anurag Maloo, FRSA, YGL (Voice of Glaciers) talked about entrepreneurship and his mountaineering journey. He dwelled upon the importance of mountains in sustainable water management.
Surya Narayanan Balasubramaniam, PhD from Acres of Ice shared the story of his journey from a volunteer to an entrepreneur. In his speech he expressed the urgency to work towards water management in Ladakh in general and Zanskar in particular. He told the audience that the conference marks an important milestone in our attempt to empower the youth and villagers of Zankar. The speakers urged general mass of Zanskar join together to learn, share, and help shape a resilient water future for Zanskar!
