Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor
Union Territory of Ladakh
Subject: Declaration of Sodh Area as a Separate Sub-Division and Tehsil of Kargil District
Sir,
We, the people of Sodh, sincerely appreciate your initiative in creating five new districts and seventeen new tehsils in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The Sodh region, comprising the LAHDC constituencies of Akchamal, Yurbaltag, and Silmo, is a vast area that deserves to be declared a separate Tehsil in order to reduce the administrative burden on Kargil Tehsil.
The SodH region, extending from Hundurmo to Sharchay Chulichan, holds immense strategic importance along the Pakistan border. Before the 1971 Indo-Pak War, several hilltops in this region were occupied by the Pakistan Army. The Indian Army successfully recaptured these strategically important positions with the support and cooperation of the local population. The people of Sodh played a crucial role by providing guidance, logistical assistance, and every possible support to the armed forces. Their contribution was instrumental in the liberation of Hundurmo and other occupied areas.
During the conflict, the youth of Sodh rendered selfless service to the nation by voluntarily working as porters. They transported ammunition, food supplies, and other essential materials to forward military posts under extremely difficult and dangerous conditions, often without adequate food, water, or rest. Their courage, dedication, and patriotism significantly assisted the Indian Army in safeguarding the nation's borders. Despite these invaluable sacrifices and contributions, the people of Sodh have not yet received the recognition they deserve.
In view of the strategic importance of this border region and the historic contribution of its people to the defence of the nation, we humbly request that the villages of Sodh—from Akchamal to Batalik and Chulichan, including Sharchay—be declared a separate Sub-Division and Tehsil of Kargil District. This step will not only ensure better governance and accelerated development of this remote border region but will also serve as a fitting recognition of the patriotism and sacrifices of its people.
We sincerely hope that our genuine demand will receive your kind and favourable consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Kacho Ahmad Ali (Retired JKAS)
