“Kaise Mayurbhanj Odisha ka hissa bana”

"Namaskar doston! Aaj hum baat karenge ek bohot hi rochak kahani ki… kaise Mayurbhanj, jo ek samay mein ek princely state tha, aaj Odisha ka ek important district bana. Chaliye, 5 minute ke safar mein is itihaas ko samajhte hain."

Part 1 –Mayurbhanj ka Background
"Mayurbhanj ek samay mein sabse bade princely states mein se tha, jiska raj Mayurbhanj ke Bhanj dynasty karti thi. Raja Sriram Chandra Bhanjdeo aur unke vanshaj ne education, railway aur health ke field mein bohot kaam kiya. Baripada – jo aaj bhi district headquarters hai – us samay bhi ek cultural aur administrative center tha."

Part 2 – British Raj ke Dauran
"British samay mein Mayurbhanj technically ek princely state tha – matlab apna Raja tha, lekin British Crown ki authority ko bhi maanta tha. Fir bhi, Mayurbhanj apni independent policies aur development ke liye mashhoor tha. Yeh region Odisha ke development mein ek key role play kar raha tha."

Part 3 – Independence ke Baad
"1947 mein Bharat azaad hua. Us waqt 500 se zyada princely states ko Bharat ke saath merge karna tha. Mayurbhanj ke Raja Pratap Chandra Bhanjdeo ne samjha ki Odisha ke saath judna unke logon ke bhale ke liye zaruri hai.

1 January 1949 ko ek formal agreement sign hua – jisme Mayurbhanj State officially merge hoke Odisha ka part ban gaya. Yeh ek peaceful aur samjhauta wala merger tha."

Part 4 – Mayurbhanj ka Contribution
"Aaj Mayurbhanj Odisha ka sabse bada district hai area ke hisaab se. Similipal Tiger Reserve, cultural heritage, tribal traditions aur natural resources isko aur bhi khas banate hain. Agar yeh merger na hota, toh shayad Odisha ki identity itni strong na hoti."

"Toh doston, yeh thi kahani – kaise Mayurbhanj Odisha ke saath juda aur aaj ek important district bana. Yeh humein yaad dilata hai ki unity aur samjhauta hi progress ki asli raah hai. Agar aapko yeh chhoti si kahani pasand aayi, toh like, share aur comment zarur kijiye. Milte hain agle fact ka saath!"

Here are the details of Mayurbhanj State Railway (MSR) founded in 1905 by Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanj Deo:

---

📖 Background

Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanj Deo wanted to connect Baripada (capital of Mayurbhanj) with the main Bengal–Nagpur Railway line at Rupsa (present Balasore district).

He personally invested state funds for this project — it was not built by the British government but by the princely state itself.

---

🚂 Construction & Opening (1905)

The Rupsa–Baripada line (52 km / 32 miles) was completed in January 1905.

It was a narrow-gauge railway (2 ft 6 in / 762 mm), typical for princely state lines.

The line was operated under the name Mayurbhanj State Railway (MSR).

It linked Baripada to the Howrah–Madras main line at Rupsa junction, giving Mayurbhanj direct access to Kolkata and beyond.

---

🔧 Expansion

After 1905, further extensions were made:

Baripada – Bangiriposi section (completed 1907–08, ~36 km).

Thus, the total network became about 78–80 miles.

---

🏗️ Significance

The railway opened up trade and commerce for Mayurbhanj, especially in timber, lac, rice, and iron ore.

It also gave a big push to the Gorumahisani iron ore mines, which were leased to the Tatas for scientific mining.

This was one of the earliest state-funded railways in Eastern India, making Maharaja a pioneer of industrial development.

---

🌍 Legacy

The MSR ran until the mid-20th century.

After Independence, it merged into Eastern Railway (later South Eastern Railway).

The line was converted to broad gauge (5 ft 6 in / 1676 mm) in the 1990s, and today Rupsa–Baripada–Bangiriposi passenger trains still run on the same alignment.

👉 In summary:
Mayurbhanj Railway was founded in 1905 by Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanj Deo, starting with the 52 km Rupsa–Baripada line, later extended to Bangiriposi. It was entirely state-funded, narrow-gauge, and played a crucial role in opening up Mayurbhanj’s economy to the outside world.

In 1900, Mayurbhanj was not yet a part of modern Odisha (then Orissa Division under Bengal Presidency). It was a princely state under the rule of the Bhanja dynasty.

Ruler: Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanj Deo (reigned 1882–1912), often called the "Modern Architect of Mayurbhanj." He was progressive and invested in education, health, infrastructure, and industry.

Political Status:

It was a feudatory state under British India, enjoying internal autonomy but under the suzerainty of the British Crown.

The capital was Baripada.

Modernization Efforts:

The Maharaja introduced reforms in education, set up schools and promoted higher studies.

He laid the foundation of Mayurbhanj State Railway (MSR) in 1905, though planning began earlier.

He encouraged healthcare, establishing hospitals and introducing vaccination programs.

Economy:

Rich in forests and minerals, especially iron ore, timber, and lac.

Agriculture and forest produce were the backbone of the rural economy.

Society:

Mayurbhanj was home to many tribal communities like Santhals, Hos, Kolhas, and Bhumijs.

Social and cultural reforms were initiated by the Maharaja to uplift these groups.

Legacy:

The state was well-known for its progressive governance compared to many other princely states of India at that time.

Later, Mayurbhanj merged with Odisha in 1949 after independence.

Let MAYURBHANJ BE ONE. DON'T DIVIDE.
