A graduate from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand has developed a 3D-printed exoskeletal cast that might spell the end of plaster casts. The Cortex exoskeletal cast provides, according to its creator, a “highly technical and trauma zone localised support system that is fully ventilated, super light and shower friendly”. Best part, besides being environmentally friendly, it’s tailor-made as it's printed using X-rays and 3D scans of the patient.

Scientists are carbon dating huge, ancient trees perserved in a New Zealand swamp in order to map environmental changes going back thousands of years. Kauri trees grow for 2,000 years, and these particular trees were mysteriously buried under a peat swamp - some perfectly preserved specimens have been found that are 60,000 years old. The study by the University of Waikato will analyse the amount of Carbon 14 in the buried tree rings, which reflects atmospheric levels at that time.
