Skip Rs.500 tape, ruin your entire slab โŒ

See this water leaking from the shuttering joint? When water leaks, cement also leaks with it. Thatโ€™s where honeycomb, leakage and rough finish starts.

Fix is simple - apply black shuttering tape on every shuttering joint. Joint becomes air-tight, finish becomes smooth, and you save thousands in plaster.

A tiny Cover Block can decide the lifespan of your entire RCC structure! ๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Most people focus on cement, reinforcement steel, and concrete grade, but often ignore one of the most important components in RCC construction the Cover Block. Although small in size, it maintains the required concrete cover between reinforcement bars and the outer concrete surface, protecting the steel from corrosion, moisture, carbonation, chlorides, and environmental exposure. ๐Ÿ’ช

If reinforcement bars touch the shuttering or the ground, the concrete cover reduces, increasing the chances of rusting, honeycombing, cracks, spalling, reduced bond strength, and premature structural failure. โš ๏ธ

Recommended Cover Block Thickness ๐Ÿ“

๐Ÿ”น PCC: 25 mm (if reinforcement is provided)
๐Ÿ”น Slab: 20โ€“25 mm
๐Ÿ”น Beam: 25โ€“40 mm
๐Ÿ”น Column: 40 mm
๐Ÿ”น Footing: 50 mm
๐Ÿ”น Raft Foundation: 50โ€“75 mm (as per design)
๐Ÿ”น Retaining Wall / Water Retaining Structures: As per structural drawings and exposure conditions

Before RCC casting, always ensure:

โœ… Cover blocks are properly fixed to reinforcement.
โœ… Correct spacing is maintained throughout the member.
โœ… Damaged or broken cover blocks are replaced.
โœ… Cement concrete cover blocks of the correct size are used.
โœ… Reinforcement is not touching the shuttering or soil.

โŒ Never use bricks, stones, wood pieces, tile fragments, or broken concrete as cover blocks. They cannot maintain the required concrete cover and may reduce the durability of the structure.

Every millimetre of concrete cover matters. A properly selected cover block improves durability, protects reinforcement steel, and helps your RCC structure perform safely for decades. ๐Ÿ

Septic Tank Dimensions : Explained

04/08/2026

A septic tank that is too small will fill up quickly, while an oversized one can reduce treatment efficiency. Choosing the right dimensions is just as important as good construction.

A well-designed septic tank ensures efficient wastewater treatment, reduces maintenance, and prevents problems such as overflow, foul odour, and leakage. The size of the septic tank should always be selected based on the number of family members, daily water consumption, and local building regulations not by copying your neighbourโ€™s design.

Along with the correct dimensions, proper construction practices are equally important. A septic tank should include a partition wall, adequate liquid depth, proper inlet and outlet pipe levels, a vent pipe for gas release, leak-proof plastering, and a strong RCC cover slab. Waterproofing and proper curing also improve durability and increase the life of the structure.

As a general guideline, the length is usually kept around twice the width, allowing better flow and settling of solids. However, the final dimensions should always comply with local codes and the expected sewage load.

A properly constructed septic tank not only protects your home but also helps maintain hygiene and minimizes future repair costs.

Watch the full video to understand the recommended septic tank dimensions for different family sizes, construction tips, and common mistakes that every homeowner should avoid before starting construction.

๐Ÿšจ Your slab doesnโ€™t fail because of less cementโ€”it fails because of the wrong concrete mix, excess water, and poor workmanship.

A strong RCC slab begins with selecting the correct concrete grade as per the structural drawings. For residential construction, M20 concrete is commonly used, and for site-mixed concrete, the nominal ratio is 1 : 1.5 : 3 (Cement : Sand : Aggregate). However, whenever Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) is used, always follow the approved design mix supplied for the project.

Equally important is the water-cement ratio. Adding extra water to improve workability may seem convenient, but it reduces concrete strength and durability. Use clean materials, maintain uniform mixing, and avoid interruptions during slab casting to prevent cold joints.

During concreting, use a needle vi****or for proper compaction to eliminate air voids, but avoid over-vibration, which can cause segregation. After finishing the slab, start curing at the appropriate time and continue for the recommended duration to help the concrete achieve its design strength.

Remember, concrete quality depends on much more than the mix ratio. Material quality, batching accuracy, water control, compaction, finishing, and curing all work together to produce a strong and durable slab.

Watch the full video to understand the correct concrete ratio, common site mistakes, and the best construction practices for slab casting.

A strong slab starts with proper shuttering. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ Before concrete is poured, shuttering should be thoroughly inspected to ensure the slab maintains the correct shape, level, and dimensions. Even small mistakes at this stage can lead to uneven slabs, honeycombing, slurry leakage, excessive deflection, and costly repairs.

Before slab casting, check that all wooden battens are straight and not bent or twisted. Verify the shuttering level using a water level or laser level, ensure props and supports are firm and properly spaced, and confirm that all joints are tightly sealed to prevent cement slurry leakage. Applying shuttering tape at the joints and shuttering oil on the formwork helps achieve a cleaner concrete finish and easier de-shuttering.

Also inspect that reinforcement bars are correctly positioned with cover blocks, all debris and loose materials are removed from the shuttering, and electrical conduits, plumbing sleeves, and embedded items are fixed before concreting begins. For larger spans, ensure the required camber is provided according to the structural drawings.

Good shuttering is not just about supporting wet concreteโ€”it directly affects the quality, strength, alignment, and finish of the final RCC structure. Taking a few extra minutes to inspect the formwork can prevent major construction defects later.

PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) is the first concrete layer placed below the footing, providing a clean, level, and stable base for the foundation. Although it contains no steel reinforcement, PCC plays a vital role in ensuring the strength and durability of the entire structure.

Technical Points ๐Ÿ“Œ

โœ”๏ธ Made of Cement + Sand + 20 mm Aggregate + Water
โœ”๏ธ No steel reinforcement is used
โœ”๏ธ Common Grade: M10
โœ”๏ธ Mix Ratio: 1 : 3 : 6 (Cement : Sand : Aggregate)
โœ”๏ธ Thickness: 75โ€“100 mm (3โ€“4 inches) (as per structural design)
โœ”๏ธ Water-Cement Ratio: 0.45โ€“0.60 (depending on workability)
โœ”๏ธ Laid after excavation, leveling, and compaction
โœ”๏ธ Proper compaction by tamping/vibration is essential
โœ”๏ธ Surface should be finished level and smooth
โœ”๏ธ Recommended curing: 3โ€“7 days
โœ”๏ธ Prevents cement slurry loss into the soil
โœ”๏ธ Creates a firm working platform for footing reinforcement
โœ”๏ธ Helps distribute loads uniformly and reduces ground moisture pe*******on

A properly executed PCC layer improves foundation quality and provides the perfect base for RCC footing construction.
