Booking for this year’s Carpet Sahib’s Trail is now open!

This trail takes you beyond the familiar Corbett circuit and into the Kumaon that shaped Corbett’s writings.

Across the trail, his stories become a way of exploring the landscape: walking through forests and village paths, visiting places connected to his accounts, meeting local communities, sharing local food, and spending time in the landscapes he knew so closely.

The Carpet Sahib’s Trail is a journey for those interested in the intersection of literature, landscape, history, wildlife and local culture. The Mini Trail offers a shorter immersion, while the Full Trail follows a wider route through Kumaon, exploring locations and encounters described in Corbett’s stories. Lucknow can never fall short in ways that it can tell a story. Sometimes it comes through a sher. Sometimes through a story passed from one generation to another. And sometimes, quite simply, through a meal placed on the table.

On 13 September, we’re bringing these threads together over an afternoon at the home of our very own chef Chetna, with ghazal, daastangoi and a home-cooked Awadhi-Kayastha meal.

It is an intimate gathering around some of the things that make Lucknow interesting to us: the connections between food, memory, language, people and the histories that continue to live in the city.

Some places are best understood by walking through them. The British Residency in Lucknow is one such place. Its ruined walls, surviving structures and traces of the 1857 siege hold stories that are easy to miss when you simply pass through.

For teachers and students, this specially curated heritage walk offers an opportunity to step beyond the classroom and explore history on site, through storytelling, observation and discussion.

On 6 September 2026, join Deep Dive India for War Chronicles at the British Residency, a morning walk tracing the events of the 1857 uprising and the 148-day siege of the Residency.

At Deep Dive India, we curate immersive learning and travel experiences around history, culture, geology and the stories embedded in a place. We can also plan custom heritage walks, educational experiences, school programmes and bespoke itineraries around your interests and schedule.

One of our home chefs, Chetna Srivastava, has been featured in today’s newspaper for her work with traditional Kayastha food, including Patod, a dish she also serves at our home dining experiences.

For us, this is exactly why home dining matters.

Some of Lucknow’s most interesting food stories live in family kitchens, carried through recipes, techniques, memories and the people who continue to cook them.

Chetna has been documenting and sharing Kayastha cuisine through the Kayastha Table, while her home has also hosted Deep Dive India’s Kayastha Home Dining experiences.

We bring these food traditions to the table through small, intimate home dining experiences, where the meal is accompanied by the stories, histories and people behind it.

If there is a regional cuisine, home kitchen or food tradition you would like us to explore, write to us at Deep Dive India. We also curate bespoke cultural experiences, culinary trails and home dining around Lucknow and beyond.

A cuisine shaped by migration, patronage, and exchange.

Rampur’s culinary tradition began with the Pathan settlers of Rohilkhand and evolved through generations of life in the fertile plains. After 1857, the migration of Awadhi khansamas to Rampur brought with it techniques and refinements from the kitchens of Lucknow, creating a distinctive meeting point of Afghan, Rohilla and Awadhi influences.

This is the story behind Rampur Home Dining, our upcoming sit-down experience in Lucknow. Expect a menu that traces this culinary exchange through dishes such as Shami Kebab, Yakhni Pulao, Murgh Qorma, Saag ka Gosht and Dhungare Baigan.
