ILDS Hospital successfully hosted the UGI Standardization & Advanced Diagnostic Endoscopy Workshop – North East on 4th & 5th June 2026, bringing together expertise from India and Japan to advance the standards of gastrointestinal endoscopy in the region.
We were honoured to welcome Prof. Noriya Uedo from Japan, alongside Dr. Suraj N. Kumar, for two days of knowledge sharing, discussions, and live case demonstrations focused on improving early detection and diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases.
A key focus of the workshop was raising awareness about Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and its role in stomach cancer.
Just as smoking can cause lung cancer, H. pylori is classified as a Class I carcinogen and can directly lead to stomach cancer. It remains one of the leading causes of gastric cancer worldwide.
While Japan has significantly reduced H. pylori infection through nationwide screening and treatment programs, India continues to have a high prevalence, with nearly 80% of the population estimated to be infected. In Manipur as well, H. pylori infection remains highly prevalent, increasing the risk of stomach cancer and emphasizing the importance of awareness, early detection, and timely treatment.
Together, through education, innovation, and collaboration, we can improve outcomes and work towards reducing the burden of gastric cancer in our community.
