Recently, ShankhNaad, a page notorious for spreading false information and propagating communal tension, tweeted a picture of an elderly woman with blood trickling down her face. They claimed that it was the picture of a Hindu Keralite woman who was beaten up by Muslims. They also alleged that a temple was destroyed in the violence.

The tweet has been deleted by the page, but not before it was shared by thousands of people, including Paresh Rawal.

Where is the picture actually from?
The truth is far from what was being propagated on social media. This is a picture from October 2017 and it is from Bangladesh. A page called Suptodisha shared it on Facebook. The caption says that the woman is from a small village in Chittagong. She is alone and poor and her neighbours are influential. The neighbours, Pradip Ghosh and his son Biswajeet Ghosh, beat her up. Then the post goes on to seeking support for the helpless woman.

ShankhNaad - an infamous fake news portal

ShankhNaad had earlier shared a post containing false details of the horrific Kathua r**e case. They claimed that the girl was not r**ed, only murdered. The police and post-mortem report both mentioned clearly that the eight-year-old girl was found prima facie r**ed and murdered.

Another of their lies said that it was impossible for the girl to be r**ed inside a temple that is always crowded and in the middle of a street. The investigation had already revealed that the temple was in the middle of nowhere inside a forest. The girl was heavily sedated and kept inside covered. All the other points mentioned in their article were also false and refuted by

In September 2017, ShankhNaad tweeted a video showing a blazing fire, stating that “Hindu temple, vehicle and cows in Gaushala were set on fire by Muslims mobs in Hyderabad.” The Hyderabad police confirmed that no such violence had taken place anywhere in the city

Another example of stoking communal disharmony — in October 2017, they put up a photo of a beheaded Swami Vivekananda statue and pinned the responsibility on Muslims in Badhohi, UP. The SP of Bhadohi, following these rumours, issued a clarification stating that one Premchandra Gautam had been arrested for the vandalism, and as the name suggests, he wasn't a Muslim.

The way to tackle pages like ShankhNaad and alike is to not give them the power to influence. Every piece of information that we spot on social media can be verified, and this is how. Once we discover that a page or a group is propagating communal tension, hate speech or religious intolerance, we should report them.

Creating or sharing fake news is never justified. We have a responsibility to verify everything that we post on the internet. To ensure that our national debate is healthy and well-informed, each and every one of us has a responsibility of treating what we read with a pinch of salt, a spoonful of doubt, and a flood of research.

Please don't share photos/images that you receive on WhatsApp/social media that are not attributed to sources and are without details, based just on speculations.

There is communalism - the beliefs of religion, religion, culture, ethnicity, caste, race etc. are the basis of religion and the religion of its belief is dishonest to the best and the second recognized religion. To understand, to hate and spread hatred towards them. When there will be a nation in the name of religion, then what will prevent people from becoming a nation on the basis of race, caste, language etc.? How can I stop? Then, what would be the picture of the present Indian nation with such a diversity? Will those who talk about the state-nation based on religion or those who support them, ever look into it? Demand for a secular state-nation is an appeal to the disintegration of Indian society and nation. And the reality is that the goals of many economic, political inherent interests are hidden behind the demand of a nation.

A message is viral on WhatsApp and other social media platforms claiming RBI has frozen all account in Punjab National Bank
“RBI freezes Punjab National bank all accounts till further notice with immediate effect. Cash withdrawal only Rs. 3000/-
*Plz don’t accept any cheque of punjab national bank*
forwarded as received”


RBI has not taken any such step, the message is viral since last 4 days i.e. from 15th Feb but no such change in PNB branches, people still are able to do the banking as usual.

1. Bank has already initiated prompt steps for protecting the financial interest of all the lenders/stakeholders including issuance of advisory to lenders involved and to act swiftly to recover the dues.
2. The fraud which was detected by the Bank recently is a standalone incident in one of our branches. It started in March, 2011. We have put our Inspection & Audit Department into action and have not found any other similar incidence.
3. Punjab National Bank has proactively detected and reported this fraud to various Law and Enforcement Agencies and as per the media reports Enforcement Directorate has initiated raids for booking the culprits & to safeguard the financial interest of the lenders.
4. The Bank has kept the other member banks participating in the consortium funding of these two Groups involved to protect the financial interest of banking system at large.
5. Bank has decided to come-on heavily on everyone who was involved in such fraudulent activities so as to pursue clean banking and reforms agenda of the Government.
