Design interventions are all around us. From village activities, to diverse cultural practices, through culinary experiences, innovations in architecture, mobility and knowledge sharing through narratives. This years ICoRD 25 promotion video portrays a journey from the village roots, towards Hyderabad old city, new city and arrives at the IITH Hyderabad campus. The aesthetic is inspired by the classical cheriyal paintings. This film is an outcome of the motion graphics class in 2024. It is dedicated to all craft communities.

📢 Keynote Speaker
Prof. Amarendra Kumar Das
Department of Design,
IIT Guwahati
Topic :
Design for the Society. Is it just design or more?
About the talk :
Designing for societal needs in Indian context is very diverse.Due to diversity, a single design in India cannot be a universal design to benefit the entire country. Design alone is not good enough; in addition to the users’ need, designer needs to consider many other factors to bring the design to people to benefit the society. Economic and financial viability are such factors. One can design a product as an economically viable and financially feasible one, but still it may not come into market to benefit the society. In this case, designer needs to strategize special arrangements for transfer of design to MSMEs, setting up manufacturing, distribution, procurement by the beneficiaries and effecting policy decisions where required.
About the speaker :
Amarendra Kumar Das is Professor in the Department of Design, IIT Guwahati with diverse expertise in design and technology. Most of his designs are directly related to society, whether these are assistive devices or water filtration systems for potable water. His design emphasis is to design products for the society and market these successfully. His notable design includes Dipbahan, a Human Powered Tricycle rickshaws, Electric 3 wheelers, Rural Buses, River cruise ships, hand looms for the weavers to name a few. He received various awards and patents, but he is believer of open access design for the benefits of the society.

📢 Keynote Speaker
Prof. B. Gurumoorthy
Department of Design and Manufacturing, Indian Institute of Science
Topic : Product Modelling for Digitalized Manufacturing
About the talk :
Shape/CAD models, developed in the 1940s, are foundational for capturing product and environmental shapes in today’s era of digital twins. While shape digitization is well-established, limited integration with application models across the product lifecycle hinders full digitalization.
This talk highlights IISc’s work to address this gap by enhancing CAD models with domain-specific features, integrating material data for Additive Manufacturing, and embedding behavior information for early-stage design. Key themes include higher-level shape abstractions and ontology-driven transitions to comprehensive product models.
About the speaker :
B. Gurumoorthy is a Professor at lISc in the Departments of Design and Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering, and Director of FSID, a Section 8 company advancing IISc’s outreach and innovation. His research spans CAD, Product Information Modelling, Computational Metrology, and Product Design. He earned his B.Tech from IIT Madras (1982) and M.E. and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University (1984, 1987). He has guided 20 PhDs, currently supervises 4, has 55 journal publications, 6 patents, and serves on editorial boards of four journals. As Vice-Chair of IFIP WG 5.1 (Asia-Pacific), he has licensed two technologies-automatic feature recognition and visual interactive solids-to industry.

📢 Keynote Speaker
Prof. Janet K. Allen
College of Engineering, University of Oklahoma
Topic : Designing For Service:
Increasing the Disposable Income of Micro-Entrepreneurs in Rural India
About the talk :
Rural Indian communities at the bottom of the socioeconomic pyramid face multiple challenges including low literacy, lack of capital and hopelessness. Designing for services such as electricity, water and education - rather than designing specific products - has the potential to transform these communities. Modern institutions of higher education have an important role to play in helping these rural communities boot-strap their way to self-reliance.
In the context of India’s NEP 2020 and the UN’s sustainable development goals, with the intent of initiating a conversation, I will describe a university-based designing for service ecosystem which can improve both economic viability and sustainability in rural India.
About the speaker :
Janet K. Allen is Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering and holds the John and Mary Chair in the College of Engineering at the University of Oklahoma.
Janet’s passion is to help others to create, archive, and transmit knowledge. She has an ongoing interest in simulation and modeling in support of design decision making particularly as applied to complex systems under uncertainty as well as a long-term interest in improving design pedagogy and especially educating graduate students. She has co-authored a textbook, five monographs and about 400 technical papers. Janet is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
