đŸŒŋđŸ§Ŧ International Darwin Day | 12 February đŸĸđŸĻ

Department of Zoology, Shyampur Siddheswari Mahavidyalaya proudly observes International Darwin Day on 12th February, commemorating the birth anniversary of Charles Darwin—whose ideas transformed our understanding of life, diversity, and evolution.

From the Tree of Life to the remarkable biodiversity of the GalÃĄpagos Islands, Darwin’s journey continues to inspire scientific curiosity and critical thinking. His observations on Darwin’s finches, GalÃĄpagos tortoises, and even fossils like Megatherium shaped the foundation of evolutionary biology and our modern view of nature.

📌 Let us celebrate science, inquiry, and the spirit of discovery.
✨ “From fossils to finches—evolution tells the story of life.”

We are deeply saddened to know that The Legend, Dr. Jane Goodall, the world-renowned primatologist, ethologist, and conservationist, left us on October 1, 2025, at the age of 91.

End of an era... end of a mighty life that encouraged millions of youths to dream big.

Her pioneering work at Gombe Stream National Park transformed our understanding of chimpanzees and challenged the boundaries between humans and animals. She showed us that empathy, curiosity, and respect for nature are the cornerstones of scientific discovery.

Beyond research, she was a tireless advocate — founding the Jane Goodall Institute, inspiring generations through Roots & Shoots, and urging action on climate, wildlife, and ecosystems.

Her legacy will endure in every forest restored, every chimpanzee protected, and every young mind she inspired. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, the Jane Goodall Institute, and all whose lives she touched.

May her spirit continue to guide us to live more gently with our planet. 💔

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL HORSESHOE CRAB DAY
Horseshoe Crabs, also known as "Living Fossils", inhabit sandy shorelines and mudflats, are not true crabs, rather more closely related to spiders and scorpions.
They have existed since 445 million years, well before even dinosaurs.
It has ten eyes and unique blue blood (contains 'Limulus Amebocyte Lysate', which have an important role in biomedical industry).
Its eggs provide a vital energy source for migratory birds and turtles.
Habitat loss, overexploitation, coastal development and shoreline erosion pushed this extraordinary creature to the brink of extinction.
It's time to save this living legend.

Save Horseshoe Crab.
