On 8 June 1948, just ten months after India gained independence, Air India International inaugurated its first-ever international commercial passenger flight. The Lockheed L-749A Constellation aircraft “Malabar Princess” (VT‑CQP), a 40-seater, took off from Bombay (Mumbai) and reached London Heathrow via Cairo and Geneva . On board were 35 passengers, including business leaders and dignitaries . The ticket price was ₹1,720, a notable fare at the time .
The flight was commanded by Captain K.R. Gujdar with co-pilot Vijay Yeshwant Korgaokar . J.R.D. Tata played a crucial role in making it happen. As the founder of Air India International—a joint venture between Tata Sons and the Government of India—he laid the foundation for India to become one of the first Asian nations to operate international air services .
This flight symbolized India’s post-independence ambition — connecting the nation to the world through vision, precision, and innovation.
