On 8 June 1948, just ten months after India gained independence, Air India International inaugurated its first-ever international commercial passenger flight. The Lockheed L-749A Constellation aircraft “Malabar Princess” (VT‑CQP), a 40-seater, took off from Bombay (Mumbai) and reached London Heathrow via Cairo and Geneva .
