Punkri Burwadih is about a 23 kms SW to Hazaribagh in North Jharkhand state in East India while driving towards Barkagaon. Punkri Burwadih stands aloof from many other megaliths in and around the region and beyond. The site though was not originally discovered by me but it has been my study site since a decade now. Consecutively I have learnt that Punkri Burwadih megaliths apart from being a bur

ial of the erstwhile tribals was also created by them for calendrical purposes. It was also built for the purpose of observing the transits of the sun; therefore the monument was also intended to perform as an observatory. The entire site is positioned on a raised piece of land so that the observation of the sun can be done without any obstacle. Two tall menhirs marked as M1 and M2 have been placed adjacent to each other so that a "V" feature emerges.These stones are made to face towards an azimuth of approximately 117 degrees which is the bearing of the Winter Solstice sunrise in this Latitude. Just to its left is also another smaller stone with a semicircular crown which is marked as M3. The difference between the distance of M2 and M3 is double the distance between M1 and M2. To the farthest opposite of these menhirs is a small stone marked A which has been placed oriented towards the due North South.This is the meridian stone of the site. Moving towards the South of the small stone A in its right is a recumbent stone facing the "V" slot at about 60 degrees. On midsummer mornings of 20/21st June one can view the summer solstice sunrise through the "V" standing behind this recumbent pointer stone. Standing at a specific point and facing the the "V" feature at the due East one can view the Equinox sunrises on 20/21st march and 22/23 sept. Quite a crowd gathers here to view this spectacle on Equinox mornings. Punkri Burwadih is the only megalithic complex in the country where both the equinox and Summer Solstice sunrises could be observed. A stone circle attached to the site and a ph***ic stone that stand at its center. Each and every stone here has been positioned to major notches and peaks of the encircling hills. Many stones are positioned in alignment to each other and also positioned to mathematical accuracy.

We couldn't view the Equinox sunrise in Punkri Burwadih due to both fog and clouds.

It been several years that we are unable to view the both the Vernal and the Autumnal Equinox sunrises through the accurately positioned menhirs in Punkri Burwadih.

Wonder if it is due to Climate Change or the pole shift that has pushed back the monsoons; making it difficult for us to view the equinoxes.

The M1 menhir of the Punkri Burwadih megaliths in India is made identical to one of the two stones of the famed Split Rock in Saudi Arabia.

These two stones at Horeb in Saudi Arabia are known as the Split Rock . It is assumed that it was through these split rocks Mosses provided water to the Jews during the Exodus.

How can these two menhirs placed so far apart be identical...Coincidence ?
