St. Dominic Savio Hr.Sec. School Garobadha Hosted the Scouts and Guides Summer Camp 2026.

The Scouts and Guides Summer Camp 2026 was successfully organized by the South West Garo Hills District Association from 24th to 26th September 2026 at St. Dominic Savio Higher Secondary School, Garobadha, South West Garo Hills, Meghalaya. The three-day camp brought together 286 participants from 12 schools under the District School Education Department of South West Garo Hills. The participants comprised 89 Scouts, 171 Guides, 13 Service Members, and 13 Staff Members.
The camp was conducted under the leadership of Shri Pular D. Shira, District Secretary, with the support of Shri Debar A. Sangma, District Organizing Commissioner, and Shri Victor Derama T. Sangma, District Training Commissioner.
On the first day of the camp, Fr. Punit Kumar Lakra, Principal of St. Dominic Savio Higher Secondary School, Garobadha, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He encouraged the participants to uphold the values of discipline, service, teamwork, and leadership.
A major highlight of the camp was the Grand Campfire, graced by Shri K. R. Marak, former District Secretary of Meghalaya Bharat Scouts & Guides and Principal of Ampati Government Higher Secondary School, as the Chief Guest. The campfire provided an opportunity for the Scouts and Guides to showcase their talents, creativity, and spirit of unity.
The Summer Scout Camp provided the participants with valuable opportunities to develop leadership, discipline, self-reliance, teamwork, cooperation, and a spirit of service. The various camp activities also enabled the young participants to gain practical knowledge, strengthen their confidence, and develop a greater sense of responsibility.
The successful completion of the three-day camp was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the District Association, School Authorities, Leaders, Trainers, Staff, Volunteers, and Participants. The camp concluded with a strong spirit of fellowship, unity, and renewed commitment to the ideals and principles of the Scouts and Guides movement.

Over 500 Families in Tura Receive Arka Poorna Guava Saplings to Promote Nutritional Security.

On 23 September 2026, more than 500 families in Tura received Arka Poorna guava saplings as part of a collaborative initiative by North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura Campus, Holy Cross Church and Bosco Mount, Rongkhon Parish, and the ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (ICAR-IIHR), Bengaluru, aimed at promoting kitchen gardening, household nutrition and sustainable agriculture in the North Eastern Hill region.
The saplings were distributed during a skill development programme on “Arka Poorna Guava Cultivation through ICAR-IIHR Technologies for Enhancing Nutritional Security in NEH Region,” held at Holy Cross Church, Bosco Mount, Rongkhon Parish. Each beneficiary family received two saplings, with the organisers encouraging households to cultivate guava in their home gardens and, in due course, explore opportunities for commercial production.
Arka Poorna is an improved guava hybrid developed by ICAR-IIHR from the cross of Purple Local and Allahabad Safeda. The variety is known for its attractive pink pulp, good flavour and high vitamin C content. ICAR-IIHR reports vitamin C levels of approximately 190–198 mg per 100 grams, making the variety particularly relevant to efforts to strengthen household nutritional security while also offering potential for income generation through commercial cultivation.
Prof. C. P. Suresh, Department of Horticulture, NEHU, and Coordinator of the Capacity Building Programme for the North Eastern Hill Region, provided technical information on Arka Poorna and its cultivation practices. He highlighted the importance of fruit cultivation in improving household nutrition and explained that the distribution of saplings was intended to encourage families to take up kitchen gardening, increase access to nutritious food and contribute to addressing malnutrition.
He emphasised that the initiative was not merely about distributing planting material but about encouraging families to grow nutritious food themselves and make home-grown produce a regular part of their diets.
The programme was chaired by Dr George Plathottam, Director of the Skill Development Centre, Mendal. In his address, he stressed the importance of practical agricultural and kitchen-gardening skills in promoting household well-being, self-reliance, economic opportunities and sustainable community development.
Dr Jyothi V. Vastrad, Guest of Honour, highlighted the role of NEHU's academic departments, particularly the Department of Horticulture, in bringing agricultural knowledge, scientific expertise and improved technologies to local communities. He appreciated the collaboration between the university, ICAR-IIHR and local organisations, noting that such partnerships could effectively connect scientific expertise and improved planting material with the needs of communities. He also expressed appreciation to ICAR-IIHR for providing the planting material and technical support.
The Chief Guest, Lalit Mohan Sharma, DIG, Sector Headquarters BSF, Tura, encouraged the beneficiaries to make productive use of the guava plants, multiply the planting material and gradually explore commercial cultivation. He underlined the importance of turning agricultural initiatives into sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The initiative was also strengthened by the active involvement of Holy Cross Church and Bosco Mount, Rongkhon Parish. Rev. Fr Justin Arul Chinnaparaj, A.P.P., coordinated the participation of parishioners and encouraged them to make use of the opportunity and benefit from the programme.
Fr Benjamin Daimari, Rector of Bosco Mount welcomed the guests, resource persons and participants. Rev. Fr Joseph Almeida, delivered the vote of thanks. He acknowledged the contributions of NEHU Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. K. Barik; ICAR-IIHR Director Dr Tushar Kanthi Behara; Dr T. Sakthivel, Nodal Officer for the Capacity Building Programme for the North Eastern Hill Region; Prof. J. U. Ahmed, NEHU Tura Campus-in-Charge; and Prof. C. P. Suresh, along with the organisers, resource persons and beneficiaries.
The programme brought together academic institutions, a national horticultural research institute and a local faith community in a common effort to promote nutritional security, practical agricultural skills and sustainable livelihoods. The distribution of Arka Poorna guava saplings is expected to encourage more families to take up fruit cultivation and kitchen gardening, while potentially creating a pathway from household-level nutrition to small-scale commercial guava production.

St. Dominic Savio Higher Secondary School, Garobadha, participated with enthusiasm in the District-Level Chief Minister’s Youth Engagement Programme 2026, held at Ampati on Tuesday, 22 September.
The programme provided a vibrant platform for young students to demonstrate their talent, creativity, confidence, teamwork and leadership skills through a variety of competitions and activities. The students of St. Dominic Savio Higher Secondary School made a remarkable mark with their outstanding performances across several events.
The school secured first position in Painting and Story Writing, while it won second position in Quiz, Tug of War and One Act Play. The students also secured third position in Declaration. Garo-Assamese Youth Celebrate Faith, Friendship and Fellowship at Don Bosco Matunga.

Around 510 Garo-Assamese youth gathered at the Shrine of Don Bosco’s Madonna, Matunga, on Sunday, 20 September 2026, for their monthly Eucharistic celebration, bringing together young people in an atmosphere of faith, fellowship and community.
The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Fr. Parsiush Marak SJ, who served as the main celebrant. The gathering provided the youth with an opportunity to come together in prayer, strengthen their faith and celebrate their shared cultural bonds.
The spirit of fellowship continued in the afternoon with the much-awaited FRIENDSHIP CUP. The semi-finals and finals commenced at around 4:00 p.m. on the football turf at Don Bosco Matunga. The matches witnessed enthusiastic participation from the youth and generated a lively atmosphere of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
In the girls’ category, the Blue Team emerged as champions, while the Green Team secured the runners-up position. In the boys’ category, the Green Team lifted the championship trophy, with the White Team finishing as runners-up.
Individual prizes were also presented to players who distinguished themselves through their performance, teamwork and contribution to their respective teams.

Four Deacons Begin Month-long Formation Course.

A month-long Deacons’ Course began on 18 September in Don Bosco Renewal Centre, Bangalore, bringing together 41 deacons providing an extended period of formation and preparation for their forthcoming pastoral and youth ministry. Four Deacons from the Province namely, Deacon Soren Dominic, Deacon Npenme Haisuilube, Deacon Kurbah Marcus and Deacon Tigga Arpan are attending the Deacons’ Course.
The inaugural programme was held in the presence of Fr Biju Michael, Regional Councillor for South Asia; Fr Banzalao, Delegate for South Asia Formation; and Fr Kennedy, Provincial of the Tiruchy Province. Fr Biju Michael presided over the inaugural Holy Mass and delivered the opening conference to the deacons
In his conference, Fr Biju focused on the importance of listening with the mind, heart and will, with patience. He stressed that pastoral accompaniment requires more than simply hearing people. It calls for an attentive understanding of their situations, an empathetic response to their experiences and a willingness to accompany them patiently.
Reflecting on pastoral charity, Fr Biju highlighted the responsibility of ministers to respond to the material and basic needs of the poorest young people. He also underlined the importance of patient educational work that enables young people to become fully themselves and to grow towards human and social maturity.
He further emphasised the responsibility of pastoral ministry to educate young people in a Christian manner, helping them encounter and live the values of the Gospel. Such pastoral charity, he noted, is directed to the substance of Jesus’ own ministry, which places service, accompaniment and the integral growth of people at the heart of pastoral action.

St Joseph Sodality Williamnagar Zonal Convention Concludes with Blessing of Shrine.

The St Joseph Sodality Williamnagar Zonal Convention 2026, inaugurated at Holy Family Parish, Rongjeng, on 18 September, concluded on Sunday, 20 September, with the solemn blessing of the newly prepared St Joseph Shrine and the celebration of Holy Mass.
The blessing ceremony was presided over by Rev. Bishop Jose Chirackal DD, Auxiliary Bishop of Tura, in the presence of Shri Marcuise N. Marak, MLA, Williamnagar Constituency, priests, members of the St Joseph Sodality and a large gathering of the faithful from across the Williamnagar Zone.
In his homily, Bishop Jose reflected on the day’s Gospel parable and highlighted the urgency of caring for the people entrusted to the Church. Referring to the need for many labourers during harvest, he observed that the harvest can be lost if it is not gathered at the right time. Drawing a parallel with the mission of the Church, he stressed that the children and young people of today need timely care, guidance and accompaniment. If they are not supported and formed at the right moment, they can become vulnerable to negative influences and forces in society.
The Bishop encouraged the faithful, particularly members of the St Joseph Sodality, to recognise their responsibility in accompanying families, children and young people and helping them grow in faith and Christian values.
Rev. Fr Symplicius Kerketta SDB, Parish Priest, welcomed the Bishop, the chief guest, priests, sodality members and the faithful who gathered for the occasion. Rev. Fr Pojit Marak SDB, Rector, along with other Salesian priests, joined the celebration of the Holy Mass.
The convention brought together members of the St Joseph Sodality from various parishes within the Williamnagar Zone, providing an opportunity for prayer, fellowship, spiritual renewal and reflection on their role in the life and mission of the Church.
Following the Holy Mass, a felicitation programme was organised to honour and acknowledge those who contributed to the success of the zonal convention and the preparation of the shrine.

Satgaon Parish celebrates Third Diocesan Football Championship in four years.

The football team of Mary Help of Christians Church, Satgaon, was felicitated on Sunday, 20 September 2026, for winning the Inter-Parish Knock-Out Football Tournament of Diphu Diocese 2026 and securing the championship for the third time in four years.
The short felicitation programme was held after the first Mass at the parish church, as heavy rain prevented the planned outdoor celebration. The parish community gathered to honour the players and support staff for their outstanding achievement.
Congratulating the team, Fr. Albert Thyrniang, Parish Priest, expressed his gratitude to the players, support staff, contributors and supporters whose encouragement had helped the team perform at its best. He urged the young players to continue developing and making good use of the talents entrusted to them by God.
“May our young people continue to excel not only in football but also in every field where God has gifted them,” Fr. Albert said, expressing his hope that the achievement would inspire other young people of the parish to discover, develop and use their talents responsibly.
Mr. Joel, Team Manager, thanked the Fathers, Sisters and parishioners for their unwavering support and encouragement. He also expressed the hope that sports would increasingly become a viable career option for talented young people, providing them with opportunities to develop their abilities professionally.
Each player was presented with a traditional muffler by the Fathers, Sisters and prominent parish leaders. On behalf of the parish, Fr. Albert presented the team with a cash award of ₹11,500 for lifting the championship trophy.
Individual players were also recognised for their performances. Jack Sangma, Man of the Match in the final, Aksai Sangma, Best Goalkeeper, Reberent Sangma, Highest Scorer, and Shining Sangma, the first goal scorer in the final, were specially honoured.
Satgaon had earlier secured the championship with an emphatic 7–0 victory over Umrangso Parish of Dima Hasao district in the final played at the Sojong Parish playground on 19 September. The victory marked the parish’s third championship in four years, consolidating its strong record in the diocesan football tournament. It was against the same opponent that Satgaon had narrowly lost in the final four years ago. Hence the victory was sweeter.
The celebration concluded with gratitude to the players, coaches, supporters and the entire parish community, whose collective spirit and encouragement stood behind the team throughout the tournament.

Don Bosco School Panbazar Pays Emotional Tribute to Zubeen Garg on First Death Anniversary.

Along with people across Assam, Don Bosco School, Panbazar, paid an emotional tribute to the legendary Assamese singer, composer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg on his first death anniversary on 19 September 2026.
The tribute programme brought together the teaching staff of the school in remembrance of the beloved singer whose music and artistic contributions have left a lasting imprint on the cultural landscape of Assam. The programme was led by Principal Fr. (Dr.) Alex Mathew, Parish Priest Fr. Thomas Lakra, Vice Principal Fr. Bromio Ch. Marak, and Academic Coordinator Mollika Sharma, who joined the staff in offering floral tributes to Zubeen Garg.
The programme was coordinated by the school's music teacher Papu Gohain. A special musical rendition of Zubeen Garg's songs was presented by Commerce faculty member Purbadri Banerjee, while Sehnaz Ahmed, a member of the English faculty, presented a graceful dance performance in honour of the late singer.
Speaking on the occasion, Fr. (Dr.) Alex Mathew recalled Zubeen Garg's immense contribution to Assamese culture and music. He highlighted the singer's ability to touch the hearts of people through his music and expressed the hope that his songs and artistic legacy would continue to live in the hearts and minds of his admirers for generations to come.
The programme also remembered Zubeen Garg as a poet. Senior Hindi faculty member Malabika Roymedhi Das spoke about his life and literary creativity and recited a few of his poems, offering the gathering an insight into another dimension of his artistic personality.
The programme was anchored by senior English faculty member Bijay Laxmi Baruah, who guided the proceedings with sensitivity and warmth.
The tribute culminated in a deeply moving rendition of “Mayabini,” one of Zubeen Garg's poignant songs. As the song was sung, everyone present stood together in remembrance, many with moist eyes. The emotional finale brought the gathering to a solemn close, reflecting the profound affection and sense of loss felt by the people of Assam for a much-loved voice of the state.
Through the tribute, Don Bosco School, Panbazar, remembered Zubeen Garg not only as a celebrated musician but also as a poet, artist and cultural figure whose music continues to resonate deeply with the people of Assam.
