Cotton University

Cotton University hosted a two-day national workshop (April 20–21, 2026) to chart conservation priorities for the critically endangered White-bellied Heron (Ardea insignis), bringing together leading experts, researchers, and forest officials from across the country. With an estimated global population of fewer than 50 individuals, the species faces an uncertain future.

Inaugurated by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof Ramesh Ch. Deka, the two-day workshop focused on protecting fragile river ecosystems and addressing key threats such as unsustainable fishing, habitat disturbance, and infrastructure pressures.

Supported by The Habitat Trust and organised by Nature Conservation Foundation in collaboration with the Department of EBWS, Cotton University, the workshop brought together representatives from Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department, Wildlife Institute of India, Zoological Survey of India, Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment, Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, and Tinsukia College, among others.

We are happy to share that three of our faculty members from the Department of Hindi - Dr Kusum Kunja Malakar, Dr Nurjahan Rahmatullah and Dr Bidya Das - were honoured with the Sri Lanka-India Hindi Gaurav Samman on World Hindi Day.

The awards were presented at the 20th Writers’ Camp, jointly organised by the North-East Hindi Academy, Shillong, and the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, at the Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Colombo.

The recognition celebrates their valuable contributions to Hindi literature and the promotion of the language.

Hosted by the Registrar, the event brought together administrative officials, faculty members, and members of the staff in a warm and festive gathering, celebrating the spirit of the season.

It was an honour to host and felicitate Sahitya Akademi Award winner and author of the novel ‘Kori Khelar Shadhu’, Shri Devabrata Das, at Cotton University today.

Shri Das shared insights into his journey into writing, reflecting on his creative process and his inclination to challenge and break conventional norms of writing, thereby making the session deeply inspiring and thought-provoking for all present.

The interactive cm felicitation programme was an initiative of the Cotton University Students’ Union (CUSU), with support from the Department of Political Science and the Department of Mass Communication, Journalism and Media Studies, Cotton University.

Heartiest congratulations to Prof. Manjit K. Bhattacharyya, Head of the Department of Chemistry and Former Dean, Students’ Welfare, on being admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC).

This prestigious recognition is a testament to his outstanding contributions to the field of chemistry and his dedicated academic leadership. We wish him continued success and many more milestones ahead!

Heartiest congratulations to Prof. Arup Kumar Hazarika, Dean, Life Sciences and Head, Department of Zoology, Cotton University, on being admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (RSB).

Snapshots of an engaging Book Discussion on The Digital Decades at Cotton University!

Graced by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Cotton University Prof. Ramesh Chandra Deka as Chief Guest, the session featured the author Shri Subimal Bhattacharjee, along with distinguished panelists Prof. Shikhar Kumar Sarma, Prof. Asha Kuthari Chaudhuri and Shri Pranabjyoti Goswami, IPS.

The discussion was further enriched by insights from senior journalist Shri Mrinal Talukdar and student representative Anjali Mardi, and was moderated by Dr. Hiten Choudhury.

A vibrant exchange of ideas on India’s digital transformation made the session truly memorable.

Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ramesh Chandra Deka, Registrar (i/c) Dr. Hiren Deka, and Dean of Students’ Welfare Dr. Gunendra Das met the AIU (Association of Indian Universities) contingent of Cotton University and congratulated them for their outstanding performances at the 39th Inter-University National Youth Festival 2025–26 held at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology from March 10–14, 2026.

The team was led by Dr. Bikash Jyoti Gautam at the national level, and by Dr. Muktikam Hazarika and Dr. Bikash Jyoti Gautam at the zonal level.

Cotton University signs an MoU with Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati to foster research collaboration, academic exchange, and innovation.

Signed by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Cotton University, Prof. Ramesh Chandra Deka and Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, this partnership opens new avenues for students and faculty alike.
