Had the pleasure of visiting FLAME University, with my AIIEC tribe. Apart from a refreshingly beautiful campus and modern infra at the 75 acre campus the high point for me was attending a masterclass by none other than the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Dishan Kamdar. You’d expect a VC to be buried in meetings, but here he was—delivering a masterclass on negotiation skills in the most unexpected way: through the lens of a husband-wife relationship! It must have been the most engaging lecture I have ever attended. With his great oration and articulation skills Dr Kamdar clearly drove in the point that negotiation skills arent just for boardrooms—they are a daily survival skill!

The students gave us a campus tour from the student perspective. They were truly brilliant and I wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

Clearly, under the VCs mentorship and FLAME’s multi and interdisciplinary approach to education, FLAME can be the perfect launchpad for students.

The Counsellors meet was so meticulously planned by the most resourceful Ms Anju Deoskar. The dance workshop, also conducted by a very talented student, in our limited time window, was the cherry on the cake.

I run the risk of sounding opportunistic today, but someone must do the hard talk! I seek the attention of all parents today…….

I am sure you all read the news! Mental health was again overlooked, and a young life lost in trying to pursue a “coveted career”.

The incident is heartbreaking and while there are other aspects to be looked into, we cannot deny that it also highlights the critical role that career counselling plays in a students’ high school years. As students navigate their academic paths, the pressures of choosing a career can be overwhelming. They need careful hand holding and support right from their high school years to unlock their true potential.

In the pursuit of their future success, we parents sometimes fail to recognise how the aspirations we hold for our children, such as aiming for positions at the Big 4 firms, can create undue pressure, resulting in burnout even in the early years of their career. While these jobs can be valuable, both for the individual and the economy, they may not always align with every student’s aspiration and core strengths.

Let’s provide our children with guidance and support through empathetic and focussed career counselling.

Let’s help them explore their unique interests and abilities and develop a sense of direction that truly resonates with them.

Let’s develop a proactive approach and empower these young minds to focus on resilience and well-being while forging their career paths.

Let’s work together to ensure our children feel supported and equipped to face the challenges ahead, allowing them to define success on their own terms. Let’s put the CARE back in CAREER!
