Union Minister of Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER) Dr Jitendra Singh today described the Northeast region as the “Economic Corridor of India” for entry into international market beyond the eastern borders of the country.
He was addressing at the inaugural session of the Northeast Business Summit hosted by the Ministry of DoNER in collaboration with Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Delhi, according to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release. To “act east” distal to the eastern borders of India, we will first need to successfully “act east” proximal to the Indian borders within the eight Northeastern States, he added.
Referring to new initiatives undertaken by him, Dr Jitendra Singh said, beginning from January 2015, he has introduced the practice of holding a camp secretariat office by rotation every month in each of the eight States of Northeast and informed that two such Secretariat Camps have already been held in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh respectively, in the months of January and February while the camp in March will be held in Mizoram.
This, he said, will send out a loud message to the people of Northeast that they do not need to travel to New Delhi each time when they have a grievance. On the contrary, it is New Delhi which will reach out to them, he added.
DoNER will also be taking up the project “Make in North-East” on the lines of “Make in India” project which was earlier announced by the Prime Minister. Dr Jitendra Singh said he is personally trying to reach out to industrial houses to promote organic farming and food processing which will generate revenue as well as employment in the region.
He appealed to leaders of the business community including Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to become active participants in this initiative and to inspire potential investors and entrepreneurs to supplement the DoNER Ministry’s efforts in the region. This will not only help in promoting industry and business but will also bridge the psychological barriers and bring Northeast closer to mainstream India’s brisk march on the road to development and growth, he observed.
Senior government representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar are participating in this summit.
The budget estimate of the ministry for the year 2015-16 is about Rs 2150 crores.
Mary Kom appointed
NE Brand Ambassador
Olympic medal winning boxer MC Mary Kom is being appointed as the brand ambassador of the Northeast to showcase the potential of the region which offers Rs. 2.4 trillion business opportunities across various sectors.
An official announcement in this regard would be made soon, Minister of State for DoNER Dr Jitendra Singh said.
“We are going to have a brand ambassador for Northeast. So, after a lot of deliberations we have zeroed in on the name of MC Mary Kom as the brand ambassador. We will make a formal announcement in a couple of days from now when she is in Delhi,” Singh said while addressing the 10th North East Business Summit in New Delhi.
Mary Kom is a five time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.

'N-E industry can benefit from Vibrant Gujarat 2015 summit'
The meet was organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), which partners the Vibrant Gujarat event

As part of the run up to its flagship investment summit - Vibrant Gujarat 2015, the Gujarat government today came calling to the industry of Assam and North-East, inviting it to avail the benefits and opportunities of the global platform and forge collaborations and tie-ups with companies from outside the region.

A high-level delegation from Gujarat, headed by state's health and family welfare minister, Nitinbhai Patel, today interacted with industry people and businessmen from Assam and region asking them to explore the business opportunities which the Vibrant Gujarat 2015 would provide.

The meet was organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), which partners the Vibrant Gujarat event.

"Vibrant Gujarat is not just about investing in Gujarat. Assam's businessmen need not set up industry in Gujarat but you can take the opportunity of the event to forge tie-ups and collaborations with Gujarati companies and set up plants here in North-East. We will have a separate platform for such interactions in our Vibrant Gujarat 2015 summit," said Patel.

Patel said this was the first time since 2003 that a delegation from Gujarat was visiting Assam and North-East as part of the run-up to Vibrant Gujarat summit. Patel also invited Assam's industry minister Pradyut Bordoloi to attend the event.

Patel also said that as Gujarat grows, the state would need skilled workers and Assam could help the state meet this demand.

The industry of the region asked the visiting minister to work to create a institutional mechanism for long term partnership between the two states. "Let it not be a onetime affair. It's true that we could not catch up with Gujarat or rest of the country in the journey of development but partnership with Gujarat, especially in the field of business and industry, can help us benefit a lot. We would request the Gujarat government to talk to the Assam government and create some institutional mechanism through which the partnership between the two states could continue forever," said RS Joshi, chairman of Federation of Industry and Commerce of North Eastern Region (FINER), the apex trade and industry body of the region.

Vibrant Gujarat, a biennial event, is a high-level multi-stakeholder gathering, acknowledged globally as the premier forum for discussion and action on emerging opportunities in Gujarat and India. The 2015 summit, to be held from January 11 to 13, would bring together leading national and international business leaders, economists, policy makers, investment bankers, multilateral institutions, academicians and thought leaders from across the world, said Patel. The Vibrant Gujarat 2015 will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who initiated and created this biennial event in 2003.

This event is partnered by eight countries - the USA, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Singapore, South Africa and the Netherlands. Vibrant Gujarat is the only business event organised by a state government in the country that is partnered by the leading developed nations of the world.
