Most of us lack focus because we have way too many things cluttering up our brainsโฆ things that should never have been there in the first place.
In the book Getting Things done, David Allen says that our brain is designed for having ideas โฆ. not for storing a whole bunch of useless information.
In order to have great ideas we need clear mental space for clean thinking. So, we should make it a point to not clutter our mental space with information that can easily be stored externally.
The key here is to make it a ritual to get everything out of your head and into a trusted external location so that you can take action on these ideas when the time is right. Not when you are doing your high value work.
In the book The Organized Mind, Dr Daniel Levitin talks about building an external brain - also called Brain extender. He says that we must use Brain extenders to store information so that we can clear our heads for CLEAN thinking.
If you want to become hyper focused and get rid of all the clutter that you are carrying around in your head, here is today's exercise.
๐ง๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐'๐ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ:
1. Schedule an hour long slot in your calendar (today or a future day this week) for getting everything out of your head.
2. During that hour long slot, turn off all forms of connectivity (Put phone in airplane mode, turn off WiFi on your laptop) so that you can be completely focused on the task at hand.
3. Now, take individual sheets of paper and write down everything that comes to your mind in the following areas.
Don't censor yourself. Just keep writing what comes to you mind in each of these areas:
1. Health and Fitness
2. Family and Relationships
3. Business and Career
4. Finances
5. Fun and Hobbies
6. Spirituality
7. Any other areas that are important to you
4. Even though this exercise is designed for 60 minutes, you might find that you need more time. That is OK. Keep writing till you get everything out of your head.
5. Now process this list - writing down specific next steps for each of these items in these lists.
6. Now make this a weekly/bi-weekly appointment in your calendar and call it "Mental Declutter".
Helping you declutter your mind.

Peter Drucker talks about the fact that the only way to do high-quality work is to work in "Large Chunks of Uninterrupted Time".
There are a few important terms to note here ...
The first thing he said about the time required was โLarge Chunksโ
TO clarify โฆ it is impossible to do any high quality work in dribs and drabs of time.
Small chunks of time here and there are not useful because we never develop attention momentum. We need large chunks of time to be able to increase the quality of focus.
It is extremely crucial to not be interrupted when you are doing your high value, high-quality work (MVA).
Interruptions come in various varieties โฆ. most of which are self-inflicted. We constantly interrupt ourselves to check phone, email, social media, news sites and even some work-related stuff (which can usually wait).
In order to do high quality work, we must FORCE ourselves to work in LARGE chunks of UNINTERRUPTED time on our most valuable activities.
A simple tool that you can use to Force yourself to FOCUS and CONCENTRATE is to use a Countdown timer.
๐ง๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐'๐ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ:
1. What is the most important thing you must accomplish today? Let's call it your Most Valuable Task for the day.
2. How much time will that Most Valuable Task take? Ideally the task will take anywhere from 1-3 hours.
3. On your calendar, block out that time
4. Set a countdown timer for 25 minutes and work on today's Most Valuable Task till the timer hits 0
1. Turn off ALL distractions as you work on your Most Valuable Task.
1. No Email notifications.
2. No Phone Notifications.
3. No social media.
4. No news sites.
5. No visitors.
5. Take a 5 minute break. You are not allowed any screen time during this break because that will distract you. It is your time to breathe deeply, drink some water, get a snack or bust out 20 push ups. No screen time.
6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 till the task is done - Work for 25 minutes and then take a 5 minute break. Work for 25 minutes and then take a 5 minute break.
Do not change course. Do not switch tasks until the Most Valuable Task for the day is done.
This single exercise can literally double the amount of Most Valuable Work you get done any given day.

Today, we will put your vision & goals into action by identifying what you need to do in order to accomplish that long term vision.
In order to accomplish your greatest vision/goals, you have to focus your energy on doing a few things that truly matter, rather than spending your energy on a lot of different things.
In the book 80/20 Principle, Richard Koch talks about the "Pareto Principle" which states that in any field of endeavor, 80% of our results come from 20% of our efforts, while 20% of our results come from the remaining 80% of our efforts.
In order to do great things, we must focus all our energy on those 20% things that produce 80% results. How do we do that? Well, here is today's exercise:
๐ง๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐'๐ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ:
1. Grab a blank sheet of paper (not the computer or phone)
2. Set a timer for 30 minutes and turn off all distractions
3. For the next 30 minutes, write down all the things you must do in order to accomplish your Big Goal this year.
4. Rank each of these things you need to do on a scale of 1-10 on two factors:
1. The value that each of those activities create
2. Your strength in that activity
5. From that list, identify the 3 things (MVAs) that are at the intersection of
1. The greatest value created
2. Your greatest strength
6. Make sure to save this work because you will need it for future exercise.
These 3 things which are at the intersection of your "greatest strength" and "greatest value created" are what
I call your Most Valuable Activities (MVAs) or your Most Valuable Work (MVW).
Your job is to focus on these 2-3 MVAs and let go of almost everything else that is consuming your time, attention and energy.
These 3 MVAs will lead to over 80% of your overall results in life.
The fewer things you focus on in life, the higher your overall output will be. That is the power of focus.
