From Lohri’s fire to Pongal’s pot and Sankranti’s sky, gratitude unites us.”
A vibrant and joyful celebration of Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal was organized by the Students’ Welfare, Manav Rachna Educational Institutions on January 14, 2026.The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Dr. N.C. Wadhwa, Director General, MREI; Mr. Sarkar Talwar, Director Sports, Dr. Pardeep Kumar, Pro-Vice Chancellor, MRIIRS; Dr. Naresh Grover, Pro-Vice Chancellor, MRIIRS; and Dr. Puneet Batra, Pro-Vice Chancellor, MRIIRS, Dr. Deepali Bansal, Dean Engineering, MRU, Dr. Gurjeet Kaur Chawla, Dean Students Welfare. Dr. Yogita Sharma, Dean Students Welfare, MRU, Faculty/Staff Members and students of MREI.
The celebration brought together students, faculty members, and staff in a warm and festive atmosphere, reflecting the values of gratitude, prosperity, unity and cultural harmony. The event beautifully highlighted the spirit of these harvest festivals, which honour nature’s bounty, mark seasonal transitions, and celebrate the rich cultural diversity of India. The programme was a delightful celebration of talent and cultural pride, featuring enthusiastic performances by student societies from both MRIIRS and MRU, beautifully capturing the true spirit of Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal.
Rudra, the Dance Society of MRU mesmerized the audience with a high-energy and graceful performance. Moksh, the Music Society, filled the venue with soulful melodies that created a sense of warmth and nostalgia, while Rehnuma, the Literary Society, touched hearts through meaningful and poetic expressions centered on gratitude and new beginnings.
Surtarang, the Music Society of MRIIRS, enchanted the audience with harmonious, folk-inspired renditions that beautifully echoed the festive spirit. Paigam, the Theatre Society, left everyone spellbound with a powerful and emotionally moving performance depicting the legendary tale of Dula Bhati. AAIRA, the Fashion Society, added vibrant colours to the celebration with a creative fashion walk showcasing festive attire inspired by the richness of harvest traditions. The event concluded on a joyful note with an enthralling performance by Mridaksh, the Dance Society, whose graceful and rhythmic presentation reflected devotion and festive joy.
The traditional Lohri Bonfire brought everyone together in a warm and joyful moment. As people gathered around the fire, sharing festive offerings and smiles, it beautifully symbolized togetherness, gratitude and hope for prosperity.The celebration served as a meaningful reminder of gratitude towards nature, the importance of cultural diversity and the power of collective joy in strengthening bonds across the campus community. The celebrations wrapped up with vibrant and energetic dhol beats, adding a grand finale to the event.
The event advanced key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting cultural appreciation and community bonding: primarily SDG 4 (Quality Education) through fostering cultural awareness and global citizenship, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) via inclusive campus spaces, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through strong MRIIRS–MRU collaboration. It also indirectly supported SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by celebrating nature’s cycles and sustainable harvest traditions.
