Introducing Qbrick Lab Courses, an online platform for 3D modelling and digital fabrication courses for Designers and Architects.

We are currently offering an online course on Strip Morphologies, with the option for remote physical prototyping. The course includes :

1. Parametric Mesh Modelling in Rhino & Grasshopper
2. Kangaroo Physics Simulation
3. Digital Form Finding
4. Strip Based Fabrication Workflow
5. Hands on Prototyping

The course is perfect for students and young professional, who would like to learn how to create complex forms and experience the process of fabricating them.

Visit our website to learn more about this course https://courses.qbricklab.com/

Strip Morphologies 018

We have been fascinated by the works of theVeryMany since 2017. After numerous attempts to decode the logic behind strip based Morphologies, we created our own workflow to generate planar meshes that can be layered and bolted together to fabricate complex 3D geometries in cost effective manner.

Hope you like it! 🙂

Strip Morphologies emerge from discretizing complex geometries into developable strips that can be assembled into thin, stable, self supporting, complex forms. It is analogous to weaving where a simple pliable material (yarn or strip) can be interlaced and assembled in specific combination that lends a global form and strength. Discretization of doubly curved surface into strip can be used to represent 3D objects defining space, form, and structure simultaneously.

During the recently concluded workshop on , we got the idea to explore strip wise development of pavilion form in 3mm plywood. The post presents a stepwise workflow from form finding to strip length optimization to fabrication strategy and workflow.
Would love to know your thoughts on it.

Mesh version of Costa minimal surface discretized into strips for fabrications with PVC sheets and ziptie. The same can be reconstructed using metal sheets and rivets/screws.

This particular prototype was done just before the second wave of COVID 19 disrupted everything in India. Eagerly waiting to get back to fabrication.

This parametric workflow will be covered in detail among other methods during Strip Morphologies 1.0 online workshop on 18th-20th June.
