Eco-Innovation Report: Sustainable Water Management

Project Title: Plastic-Bottle Canal Lining
​1. Project Background
​Traditional water canalization often requires heavy stone or expensive concrete blocks. At Tumin Dhanbari JHS, the Eco Club identified an opportunity to solve two problems at once: managing plastic waste and creating a functional water drainage system.
​2. The Innovation: "The Eco-Brick Canal"
​The club practiced a new, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly method for constructing a water canal. Instead of utilizing traditional stones, the team used compacted plastic bottles as the structural base.
​The Process:
​Waste Collection: Collected discarded plastic bottles from the school and surrounding remote areas.
​Bottle Filling: Each bottle was tightly packed with soil. This increased the density and structural integrity of the bottles, transforming them into "eco-bricks."
​Lining and Concreting: These soil-filled bottles were then laid in the canal bed and side-walls. They served as the primary filler, replacing bulky stones.
​Final Layer: A thin layer of concrete was applied over the bottles to secure them in place and create a smooth flow for water.
​3. Benefits of the New Method
​Waste Sequestration: Significant amounts of plastic are now permanently "locked" within the school’s infrastructure, preventing them from polluting the environment.
​Resource Efficiency: By replacing stones with soil-filled bottles, the school reduced the need for mined materials and lowered construction costs.
​Soil Conservation: The canal prevents unmanaged water runoff from eroding the school grounds, especially important in hilly or remote terrains.
