Ideas of nature in the tropics have often been analyzed through the discourse of ‘tropicality,’ which posited an essential difference between the environments of the West and those of the tropical parts of the Empire. This lecture examines an alternative framing of nature in the Empire, focusing on smoke and air, where an uncanny resemblance was drawn between atmospheric conditions in English towns and Indian cities such as Calcutta and Bombay, even as Indian and European bodies were imagined as entirely distinct. The discussion highlights the racial, class, and gender relations through which energy and environment were linked in colonial cities. The analysis concludes with reflections on the relevance of this historical perspective for contemporary understandings of atmospheric and urban conditions in India.
