NATIONAL STUDENT ACADEMIC CONGRESS 2015
CONCEPT NOTE
In the era where, topographical distances matter no more, the National Student Academic Congress with its theme Power of Communication, aims to focus on organized and goal oriented communication. It is not about what one says, leading to an ineffective communication. However, it is about what one does or is observed doing. It is about any involvement with an individual or a group of people, using silence, action and inaction as the medium.
It is in this direction, that the youth is required to engage as audience, thereby provoking a response should and bringing about a change. This desired response appeals for a powerful communication system. Whatever words one uses, his actions decide the number of listeners, prior to the actual act. The words set expectations; expectations either fulfill those actions or betray them. The speaker is able to win the trust of audience if his actions meet the expectations raised by his words; he loses trust when his actions fail. Communication is about doing and not just talking.
The groups to which communication is addressed are not simply passive vessels that absorb messages. They are living beings who have their own ideas, hopes, fears, concepts, attention spans and appetites for listening. It is a mistake to think that audiences will always think and act like the speaker. Understanding the audience, the preconceptions and barriers that might prevent them from accepting what is being communicated, is a key part of the power of communication.
Thus, to acquire the power of communication is not an easy task. It requires discipline. It requires understanding the audience with whom one communicates. It requires saying and doing all that is necessary to get the desired response. Further, the requirement also lies in the absolute understanding of the predictable consequences – both intended and unintended- of words, silence, action and inaction. This conference is a follow up from the previous conference on Power of Ethics, wherein, Ethics is a notion fundamental to communication.
To further discuss the aforementioned, this Conference shall focus on the following key areas:
1. Goals of Communication
2. Theories of Communication
3. Importance of emotions in Communication
4. Connecting with audience
5. Written Communication
6. Planning for Communication
