THE BURNT TOAST THEORY
When things don’t go your way...
Back in February, I had a flight out of Sydney that was canceled just moments before boarding. The airline announced that their engineer found an issue with the aircraft that couldn’t be fixed in time.
At that point, we were the only group left in the terminal, as the airport had already closed for the night. Many people don’t know this, but Sydney International Airport has a curfew; no flights are allowed to depart between 11 PM and 6 AM.
We had to go through immigration again, retrieve our luggage, and were given Uber vouchers to head home for the night. As expected, passengers started to get frustrated.
But my first thought was, “Thank goodness they caught the issue before we took off.”
This is where The Burnt Toast Theory comes into play. It suggests that when life throws inconveniences your way, they might actually be blessings in disguise. That seemingly minor or major disruption might be protecting you from something worse.
Think of it like burning your toast in the morning. Sure, it’s annoying, but the time spent making a new slice may have saved you from something unpleasant down the road. Or maybe being late to an appointment leads to an encounter with someone who ends up playing a significant role in your life.
It’s as if the universe always has your back, even when things don’t go as planned.
As I often tell myself:
If you get what you want, that’s God’s guidance. If you don’t, that’s God’s protection. You may not understand it now, but you just have to trust His plan.
So, the next time things don’t work out the way you’d hoped, remember—you’re probably being redirected toward something even better.
