The Department of Fashion Design and Technology recently organized an educational visit to the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela. For our aspiring fashion students, this wasn’t just a fair; it was an immersive masterclass in India’s rich textile heritage and global craft trends. This year’s theme states, Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya, offered a deep dive into contrasting worlds from the intricate Chikankari and Zardozi of UP to the sustainable bamboo weaves and organic silks of the Northeast. Our students also explored the Egyptian Pavilion, gaining unique insights into Mediterranean motifs and ancient textile arts.
Direct interactions with national award-winning artisans allowed our students to witness live demonstrations of hand-looming, natural dyeing, and block printing. This exposure is vital in bridging the gap between classroom theory and the “Local to Global” movement in the fashion industry.
