The Lost Ships of Caligula โ Lake Nemi, Italy
This historic photo shows the drained lakebed of Lake Nemi, in the Alban Hills of Italy, where between 1928 and 1932, the lake was emptied on the orders of Benito Mussolini to recover two colossal Roman ships once belonging to Emperor Caligula (1st century AD).
Among the remarkable finds was this bronze hand, seen here amidst the timbers of the seconda nave (second ship). These hands capped longitudinal timbers supporting the housing for the side or quarter rudder, a key part of the shipโs steering mechanism. The first was unearthed in 1895 by Borghi, and this one later joined it in the collection.
Tragically, both ships were destroyed by fire during World War II, but some artifacts, like this hand, survive and are now displayed in the Museum of the Roman Ships at Lake Nemi.

18,000 Years of Blackfeet History, Montana
For centuries, the Blackfeet Nation of Montana has shared oral histories describing their presence in the region for thousands of yearsโa truth now confirmed by modern science.
In 2022, groundbreaking DNA evidence revealed that the Blackfeetโs ancestors have lived in Montana for at least 18,000 years, far earlier than written records or prior archaeological assumptions suggested.
For millennia, the Blackfeet people thrived across Montanaโs plains, mountains, and river valleysโdeveloping rich cultural traditions, sustainable ways of life, and deep connections to the land. This discovery affirms what their oral traditions have always carried: an enduring and unbroken heritage stretching back to the Ice Age.
This finding challenges conventional narratives and highlights the vital importance of indigenous knowledge in understanding our shared past. History is not only written in books and artifactsโit lives in stories, traditions, and the resilience of the people who have carried them forward.
The Blackfeetโs 18,000-year legacy is a testament to identity, stewardship, and survivalโa reminder that the history of North America is far older, richer, and more deeply rooted than once believed.
