Rethinking Family Obligations: A Global Dialogue on Mental Well-Being
How do we balance the weight of family "obligations" with the necessity of personal mental health?
In our latest ICERT EduTalk, we had the privilege of hosting Dr. Lisa D. Stinson, clinical psychologist and author of The Obligation Myth, for a transformative session on "Rethinking Family Obligations and Mental Well-Being."
With 620 registered participants joining from 27 countries—including India, Nigeria, Malaysia, Uganda, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, France, Japan, USA, UK, Australia, Pakistan, Romania, Northern Ireland, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Qatar, Iraq, Morocco, Brazil, Canada, Finland, South Africa, Fiji, and Oman—this session underscored a universal need for clinical frameworks that address toxic family dynamics and narcissistic abuse recovery.
Spotlight on "The Obligation Myth": We delved into Dr. Stinson's acclaimed book, The Obligation Myth, which serves as a vital resource for clinicians and survivors navigating the complex emotional and somatic burdens of toxic family systems. Amazon.com: The Obligation Myth: Rethinking What You Owe Your Difficult Aging Parent -A Guide for Adult Children of Narcissistic, Toxic or Abusive Parents eBook : Stinson PhD, Lisa D.: Kindle Store
Key Takeaways from the Session:
The "Internal Board of Directors": Dr. Stinson introduced this powerful model to help individuals navigate the conflicting internal voices (the guilty child, the angry protector, the authentic self) when making caregiving decisions.
Breaking the Transactional Myth: We explored how viewing family through a "debt" framework often leads to re-traumatization, especially for adult children of toxic parents.
Role Dynamics in Caregiving: A deep dive into how childhood roles like the "Scapegoat" or "Golden Child" are reactivated during the aging process of a parent.
Impact on Education: Insights on how understanding these family drivers can help educators create more supportive and boundary-conscious environments for students.
At ICERT, we are committed to bridging the gap between clinical research and real-world application. A huge thank you to Dr. Navneet Kaur for hosting and to all our global delegates for their insightful contributions.

On July 15, 2025, the International Council for Education, Research and Training (ICERT) hosted an International Seminar to commemorate the 10th anniversary of World Youth Skills Day (WYSD). The seminar, aligned with the UN/UNESCO-UNEVOC WYSD theme "Youth empowerment through AI and digital skills," focused on the profound impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Artificial Intelligence (AI) on global labor markets and, specifically, on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Dr. Chacko Jose P, Chief Patron and ICERT Fellow, inaugurated the seminar, emphasizing the urgent need for TVET reforms to prevent a widening digital divide and deepening global inequalities. Keynote addresses were delivered by Christina Kitson, Associate Professor of English at the University of Central Missouri, US, and Dr. Helen K. Joy, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Christ Deemed to be University. Both speakers highlighted the transformative potential of AI in personalized skills development and innovation within TVET, while also addressing the systemic challenges that necessitate comprehensive reforms.
