Did you know that the Venetian artist Vittore Carpaccio was a master of capturing the exotic allure of the Near East? In his painting, 'The Visitation,' he uses Oriental rugs to transport us to a far-off land.
It is a captivating Renaissance painting that depicts a scene from the New Testament. In this work, the Virgin Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visits her cousin Elizabeth, who is also pregnant with John the Baptist.
The painting is notable for its rich and detailed composition. Carpaccio uses a variety of colours and textures to create a visually stunning scene. The figures are depicted with great care, and their expressions convey a sense of emotion and reverence. The background is filled with architectural details and landscapes, reflecting Carpaccio's interest in the Near East.
One of the most striking features of the painting is the use of Oriental rugs on the balconies. These textiles were highly prized in Venice during the Renaissance and were often associated with luxury and wealth. Carpaccio incorporates rugs into the scene to add a touch of exoticism and to emphasize the wealth and status of the two women.
Overall, The Visitation is a masterpiece of Renaissance art that continues to captivate viewers with its beauty, detail, and religious significance.

Are you tired of seeing grumpy faces in old photographs?
Well, they wanted to smile but exposure times were too long, and holding a smile was difficult. Serious expressions were more practical.
Happy World Photography Day! Grateful that we can finally smile in photographs. 😊
