This day is celebrated every year by Indians to honor the birth of , who was an ardent devotee of . Perhaps we do not realize the importance of our voice in our lives, but what it would be like if you couldn’t make a sound. Quite a scary thought, isn’t it? To celebrate the human voice and its significance as a tool of communication and to spread awareness about the importance of having a healthy voice, April 16 is celebrated as (WVD) every year.

This year, April 8 will mark the beginning of , a by that spans over a period of nine days. The first day when the festivities start is known as ‘pratipada’ and the ninth day or ‘ ’ falls on the Shukla Paksha (the moon’s bright fortnight). This period falls on Chaitra,’ the first month of the Hindu calendar, and this is how the festival derived its name.
These nine days are dedicated to the worship of the nine different forms of , and the festival is especially celebrated in the north Indian states. The same festival takes on the name ‘ ’ in Maharashtra, and the most common forms of celebrating this festival include cleaning of houses, praying, and fasting. Devotees who perform the Chaitra Navratri observe a fast for all nine days, in which they consume vegetarian food without using onion or garlic. The breaking of the fast on the ninth day is done with eating of the Prasad.
