HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF RAVENSHAW COLLEGIATE SCHOOL, CUTTACK
Managed by a Local committee a self styled English medium school- Cuttack School came into existence on 22nd. In 1841 the Government of Orissa vides its newly constituted department - General council of Public Instruction - came to its rescue. Only in 1851 the Cuttack School was rechristened as Cuttack Zilla School and got a status of
High School - the first High school of the State. The Entrance Examination (Matriculation) was introduced in 1854 to prepare the scholars of this School to enter Calcutta University for higher education. With a view to pursue higher education, intermediate classes opened in 1867 and law classes were inducted in 1868. In, 1875 the Cuttack Zilla School was named after Mr. Ravenshaw, the then Commissioner of Orissa division. Since then, the School has been known as RAVENSHAW COLLEGIATE SCHOOL. The Intermediate College here was recognized as first grade College in 1876. In the same year the School also provided Hostel facility and after hundred years it was recognized as Residential school by the Government of Orissa.
