One eye looked like emerald, the other like gold. A rare leopard in India left wildlife lovers stunned after a photographer noticed that her eyes were two completely different colors.

Wildlife photographer Dhruv Patil spotted the female leopard resting in a tree during a safari at Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka in August 2024. Only later, while checking his photographs, did he notice that one eye appeared bluish-green while the other was deep brown, a condition known as heterochromia iridum.

The discovery attracted attention because heterochromia is seen more often in domestic cats and dogs but is extremely unusual in wild leopards. The sighting was reported as the first documented case of its kind in India, making the photographs especially valuable for wildlife researchers and enthusiasts.

Experts still have much to learn about how rare traits like this appear in wild leopard populations, and photographs alone cannot answer every genetic question. But this extraordinary animal is a beautiful reminder that even familiar species can still surprise us with something nature rarely reveals.
