Even when the new education policy announced that all undergraduate programs would be of four years, it wasn’t very happy news for me personally. Many universities, like Delhi University, already mismanage three-year programs, leaving students underprepared. Extending it to four years seemed unnecessary in many cases.

However, the silver lining is that UGC now allows a four-year graduate to directly join a PhD program, provided certain marks are achieved (commonly 75%, though this can be debated for subjects like literature or language). Previously, students had to complete a three-year graduation, two-year master’s, and sometimes M.Phil before entering a PhD.

Four-year graduates can now directly enter interdisciplinary programs in management, public policy, development studies, digital humanities, computational science, and more. Institutions like IIMs and IITs welcome graduates from diverse backgrounds into research programs.

You might feel ineligible, but these programs do not expect subject-level mastery. The coursework in a PhD program is designed to bridge knowledge gaps, typically over two years, covering master’s level knowledge plus research skills.

The coursework is rigorous and fills all gaps. No prior experience is strictly needed; any previous research experience is an advantage. The extended fourth year often includes research projects or paper writing, providing exposure to research practices.

While some subject awareness is required, it can be built through reading resources, journals, and online materials. Interdisciplinary research allows students from diverse fields to pursue topics outside their undergraduate specialization.

PhD programs are not for everyone. They are suited for individuals who are committed to research for the next four to five years and are genuinely interested in their chosen subject. The program attracts those for whom research is a career and lifestyle choice.

PhD graduates are not limited to academia or research jobs. They are increasingly sought in corporate roles, administration, government positions, and high-level executive profiles (e.g., CXO level). A PhD opens diverse career pathways.

If you are a four-year graduate with 75% marks, passionate about research, and want to explore a subject in depth, there is no institutional barrier. You need to demonstrate your interest, aptitude, and commitment. Institutions will support your preparation for tests, SOPs, and interviews.

Previously, the pathway required graduation → master’s → M.Phil → PhD. Now, a four-year graduate can directly enter a PhD program in interdisciplinary research. With rising seat availability, a PhD can be a great option for those committed to academic and research excellence.
