The raise in private universities and Deemed to be Universities in India in the recent times has resulted in the increase of quantity and not quality of intellectual property like patent, research papers, etc.

The AI summit has exposed the darker side of private universities in India.

Official data from the Indian Patent Office indicate that certain private universities have led Indian academic institutions in patent applications filed in recent years. For example, Lovely Professional University reported 1,387 filings in 2022–23, with Galgotias University, and Teerthanker Mahaveer University also ranking prominently by filing volume. However, these figures reflect applications submitted rather than patents granted.

Various summaries have noted that some private institutions filed several thousand applications over recent years while recording comparatively low grant rates, reportedly below 1 percent in certain cases, prompting scrutiny of filing strategies relative to eventual patent quality. Such comparisons, however, require careful contextualisation, as grant outcomes depend on examination timelines, claim scope, prosecution strategy, and other procedural factors.

By contrast, institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science have been reported to achieve grant rates of approximately 45 percent, with the collective Indian Institutes of Technology often cited at around 42 percent, suggesting a comparatively stronger conversion of filings into granted patents.

Taken together, these trends indicate that while high filing volumes can generate striking headline numbers, grant rates may offer a more substantive indicator of research translation. In an increasingly competitive higher education landscape, some newer deemed universities that position themselves as “centres of excellence” may therefore emphasise filing counts and rankings in public communications as part of broader branding and student recruitment strategies.
